Man charged over laser beam attack

Marissa Calligeros
August 28, 2009 - 7:21AM
A Brisbane man has been charged after allegedly shining a green laser beam towards a plane last night.

The 20-year-old Ashgrove man allegedly shone a green laser pointer towards the cock-pit of the private plane just before 6pm.

It is believed he is the second Queenslander charged under tough laser light regulations introduced last year.

"The pilot of a light aircraft reported a green light shining into his plane as he flew over Ashgrove on Brisbane's northside," a police spokesman said.

Police inquires led them to a residence in Ashgrove, where they arrested the 20-year-old and confiscated the laser.

The pilot managed to land his aircraft safely.

The 20-year-old has been charged with endangering the safe use of a vehicle.

He is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court next month.

In June, a 17-year-old boy was the first Queenslander charged under Section 26 of the Summary Offences Act, introduced by the Bligh Government last year in a bid to curb the practice of "beaming" with high intensity laser lights.
I don't know how they pinpoint these basterds but I hope they throw the book at him. Stupid swine.

17 and 20 year olds though, they won't thrown the book. The laws might be "tough" but you can guarantee the sentencing won't be.

Something along the lines of slap on the wrist and "here's a gum drop, now go and be good child"

20 years old = adult. Sentence him as an adult, even if he doesn't want to behave like one!
What sentence did the 17 year old get, I wonder? Flogging with a piece of tissue paper perhaps?

17 year olds are tried as an adults in Queensland, although that's not to say he got a huge sentence.
At least they caught one of these idiots, I think a lot of them think they can't be detected. It may deter other morons.
Ando1Bar, glad you weren't hurt / distracted into the ground.

If only lasering a plane was part of the terrorism laws. The bloke last night did WAY more damage than nail clippers ever could!

I love the "throw the book at him" types. Guess what? Prison is a great training ground for learning even worse criminal behaviour.

Yes, it's a serious problem but incarceration is the most expensive option & you risk turning an idiot into a idiot with even more criminal tendencies

the do good system: australia

I'm not saying prison I'm saying a lashing that he won't forget. Bit like that teenager in the nineties that thought it a good idea to do a bit of graffiti whilst on holiday in asia. (he was wrong-very wrong)

Sorry....sorry...let's give the miscreant a jolly good talking to and frowning at - that'll sort it. Heaven forbid we send them to prison if they've actually broken the law.
Do you understand that this behaviour has potentially disastrous consequences? I don’t think so. Perhaps it takes an aircraft spudding in on your house before you get it.
These little d*ckheads need the book thrown at them in order to serve as a good lesson to any others out there that this behaviour cannot be tolerated. And if they meet "Bubba" in there, well zero sympathy from me matey!

agree with CSD, have been 'shot at' in the past. The law was amended to deter these pricks.

I think the important thing is the detection as much as the penalty.
It's a bit like dropping rocks on cars from overpasses. Idiots keep doing it because they think they're impossible to catch. Arrest and name the culprits and the moronic minority stop and think 'Oh, I might get caught' before they do such stupid things. IMO the deterrent factor is as important as the actual sentence.
