The real idiots you can't stop but their punishment keeps the rest of us plebs in line.
Does it really though?

As I'm sure none of you remember, a few years ago a young fellow received jail time for street racing(in a new factory estate at 3am) in Melbourne. The idea was to make an example of this kid to deter others from doing the same. 5 years on, nothing has changed and nobody even remembers this poor guy even existed let alone his stupid punishment. How can you expect something to act as a deterrent if no one remembers! Punishment to fit the crime. You cant punish someone for what COULD happen.

It needs to be stopped but you wont stop it with harsher punishment and it's not fair or just.

Astronomical application

If you have not had the pleasure of using an amateur astronomical telescope, then you may not be aware of how useful a pointer laser is for pointing out celestial objects. Green is preferred as it gives better visibility.

These things are sold in telescope shops here and overseas. The vendor was a bit vague when I asked him about the legal aspects. In the end, I decided against buying one as it could result in my arrest.

Amateur astronomers are decent, responsible, caring people who would never point a laser at a plane.

But maybe an offender could mount a credible defence as to why he was pointing the beam into the sky.

Shining a device into the sky, sure. Tracking an aeroplane with a device, not so much.
