Darwin Accomodation

Hi guys,

About to move to Darwin for a new job and accomodation has proved to be harder to find than I first thought. Any info regarding a room to rent would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Direct_To

PS: Already tried the bagot community and it's booked out till March!

(Disclaimer: I was up there until around 18 months ago but I doubt that too much has changed).

See if you can get hold of the Saturday and Sunday NT news, as that is where most of the share accomodation is advertised. (You MIGHT be able to get copies at large newsagencies).

Expect to pay "Sydney" prices for rent. 18 months ago I was in Larrakeyah and paying $150.00 per week for share accom, plus expenses. That was becoming the "low end".

There are plenty of backpackers, and web searches should give you details. If you want your own room in a backpackers it's probably a good idea to book ahead.

Other tips:

-Look for accomodation that has a pool. (Nothing like a swim after a hot day in a no-aircon a/c).
-Check with the GA operators, and leave "accom wanted" info with them. GA pilots come and go in DN.
-Walking distance to Mitchell st. is a bonus (IMHO)

Good luck

DIVOSH!

Direct_to - Housing and accommodation in Darwin is exceptionally tight, despite a major building boom. This applies equally to both holidaymakers and permanent residents. The NT is undergoing boom times, with gas projects, and mining, both going gangbusters.
Don't expect to find anything under about $160 a week, and $200 isn't unusual. Darwin housing is some of the priciest in Australia - for what you get.
Pick your suburb carefully, some areas of some suburbs are pretty rough, and the drunken, fighting indigenes can be a right nuisance - despite the NT Police Force being pretty hard on 'em.
Start with Google, and I'd recommend Gumtree initially. Move fast when you see something attractive, and advertised recently.

No, not such a good idea, two girls attacked sleeping in their car last night down by the deck chair cinema on the waterfront
I wish you luck. believe folks are actually getting jobs here, then leaving because they are unable to find/pay somewhere to live.

Tinpis isnt too far of the mark. if it gets really tight, track down a caravan/campervan and stay in a caravan park. its not the most comfortable way but it'll beat a tent or wicked van

Tinny, across from the honey pot we get about 3-4 vans a night setting up to park, a quick call to the coppers and poof, their outta there.

Moving to Darwin you just have to accept that you will pay about $220 for a room.

A unit in town that is decent will cost over $400 a week or as a rough rule of thumb $220 a room so $660 for a 3 bedroom unit etc.

You'd have to be an egg head if you left Darwin and had a flying job because you found it hard to get accommodation.

Kunus is not much better, Broome is worse. It's just the price of gaining experience as a budding CPL.

Share rooms, do whatever you have to do. Sleep in your car near a caravan park and sneak in and use their ablution facilities until you find your way

I've done the same thing myself, the generation before me often slept in hangers and under office desks. It's all character building stuff

Well said Goblin,,

Darwin real estate has gone nuts in the last couple of years,,,, not cheap to buy,.,. not cheap to rent.... around 450 (450k if buying) for a decent house in the suburbs and the same for units around town, as a minimum.
If renting a bare property then one has to think of all the stuff to go in it !

I've had ad's out in the past for a house mate and God I came across some desperate people who couldn't get the real estate to approve them without a long trail in Darwin.... I've had couple's wanting to move in with kids !!

Talking about those valuable experience drills in aviation, I second you ,, sleep in a tent at Berry Springs if one has to, leaving the job because of accomodation problems is the lamest excuse I've ever heard off., cuppa concrete comes to mind
