Just realised I've been very rude and not replied to this thread!

Thanks for the suggestions one and all - slightly time constrained, sadly missed the camels, setting off this weekend - kangaroo island, arkaroola/wilpena pound, then william creek, birdsville on the plan so far, will see how far up I go before coming down the right hand side. Wussed out and plan to let the red rat take me to the rock - cheaper and less scary for a city boy

Shall be taking lots of pictures

Thumbs up overnight at Forrest

Spent last Sat night at Forrest in our C130 unexpectedly. I must say it was a great reception. Its in the middle of nowhere but if you are heading west it is a fantastic stop over. They have a few guest houses, fuel ,a hangar and aviation friendly caretakers. check it out its also got a great aviation history.
Chris.

Question outback stations with B&B?

Am planning a similar trip in August, East Coast to the Rock and back via the Gulf. Any suggestions for stations with B&B? Other ideas? Current route plan is Winton-Birdsville-Rock-Alice-Normaton-Cooktown.

I can recommend the Pilots' Touring Guide, from AOPA. As well as all the contact numbers for strips and accom it has a map of all the avgas bowsers, and there are a lot that don't belong to Shell/Mobil/BP.
