An Australian Question... well Sydney

Recently I was on holiday over there and wondered about this...
A United (I think) flight was going from the next gate to ours and there had been temporary walls put up around the gate lounge with two security guards at the entrance checking that everyone had a right to be going into the gate lounge. Is this a new security measure for flights to the USA or just for this flight? By the way this was on the 20 Jan.

In the past United have had in place their own security arrangements on top of anything else in place by local agencies, including guarding of catering, etc...

It might have something to do with that!

I've been on a QF flight to LAX and they did the same thing, you had to show your passport and ticket to go into the gate area. This was July 2007

Quite common at International ports. The airline puts its own passport check (and sometimes security check as well) in place at the gate. I've seen it at Bangkok, Amsterdam and at Heathrow.

Possibly because pax coming to the gate may have been "cleared" at some other port the airline prefers not to rely on.

It has nothing to do with the airlines as it is a security requirement imposed on the airlines if they want to fly to the good old USA. If you do not comply the you will not be accepted into US mainland airspace.

Not just mainland it applies to Hawaii also. From Sydney, I've noticed that QF and JQ flights to the USA typically use the gates on the far left "arm" of the B concourse (gates 8-10), as these gates are more isolated, making it easier to set up the additional screening areas. Not sure about United or A380 ops as I'm not sure if gates 8-10 are fitted for the A380 or not.

I'm sure the postulation about flights to USA is correct.

I've seen it at other ports including Bangkok when flying to Australia. See my earlier post.
