The NZ scene, a snapshot of stats...

I put some figures together for a posting on the "nz aviation bottoming out" thread, but I think its worthy of a new thread with this information.

Some interesting NZ Aviation figures:
2564 currently active Aeroplane CPL/SCPL/ATPL NZ licences.
1545 active CPL(A)s
1912 Aeroplanes are on the CAA register, excluding homebuilts.
315 of those are multi engine.
244 after 71 Boeing and Airbus accounted for.
194 after 50 Link aircraft.
146 multi engine aeroplanes below a B200/Metro/J32 etc
(i.e approx whats left to get your experience on before getting out of GA)

add into the mix the new pilots being trained every year in the whole country, close to 360 CPL(A) for 2008, kinda puts things into perspective...

What does 'currently active' mean if you don't mind me asking?

Does that mean an up to date CPL and holding a current Class 1 (2564 sounds like alot if that's the case), or is that simply the number of people that hold a CPL?

I remember seeing similar stats from Oz, I can't remember the details but it was something like 30-35% of CPL holders didn't hold a current medical.

It is CPL + SCPL + ATPL, Currently active; as in they have a valid Class 1 medical, it excludes those with a Class 2 medical + no medical, and therefore can't exercise the full privilages.
It is on the CAA website.
Referring to the total number ever issued is no good for comparison here if they cannot use the licence to work right now i.e this moment in time. In another moment there will be a change in aircraft numbers, licences issued, medicals renewed and expiring etc.
But if you want it for interest...
Licence Type Total Class 1 Class2
ATPLA Part 61 PL (Aeroplane) 3049 1014 949
ATPLH Part 61 PL (Helicopter) 127 51 25
CPLA Part 61 PL (Aeroplane) 4989 1547 1311
CPLB Part 61 PL (Balloon) 40 18 7
CPLG Part 61 PL (Glider) 10 3 3
CPLH Part 61 PL (Helicopter) 1641 720 416
PPLA Part 61 PL (Aeroplane) 9667 487 2844
PPLH Part 61 PL (Helicopter) 1066 98 392
RPLA Part 61 Recreational PL 59 1 20
SCPLA Part 61 PL (Aeroplane)50 5 4

and yes the number doesn't quite match my total given, because its updated/changed already from when I copied the figures last night to now!
