Seeking infinite wisdom
Hi all,
A question for those up north, I will be completing my cpl, night & inital twin rating in the next few weeks & wondering if it's worth at this stage forking out for an IFR rating? or should I just gain some valuable vfr experience first?
currently in syd doing training, but live in darwhine, so know that most flying is day VFR up there but a few ppl have mentioned it would be of benifit to have the IFR but as I have no intentions of going airlines what to people think?

I personally would do the instrument rating. Its getting in to wet season up north now where it may be beneficial to have the rating. Some operators do have IFR capable singles too where, in some circumstances, you are encouraged by the company to upgrade to IFR in deteriorating conditions.

Mate,I rather think the type of planes you would be let loose in up North will be day VFR only

Do the VFR time, you'll never regret it and in years to come, will probably look fondly back at it as the best flying you ever did in the company of the best friends you ever had.

Catch 22 it is.
One might say do it later and when you've got a handle on the general handling of aeroplanes and thus can dedicate more brain space to what they are trying to teach you. One might also say that if you happen to get a single job where there are multi ifr twins that you might be able to claim it on tax.
Then again it might mean you miss out on a job later down the track. It also means more time to go home and organise the training. And finally if you got caught in cloud how do you think you'd go. Now I don't know if it was IF skills or what but at a very early stage in my career i went inadvertently into cloud at a low level. I calmly did a rate one 180 and left cloud.
