GA at YSCB

Hi All,

Looking to overnight at Canberra with an Archer.

Have used GAAP and into/out of YMEN quite often before, but this would be my first flight into the Capital. Any advice, suggestions - including a place to overnight which is clean and reasonably priced - would be welcomed.

TIA.

Public transport is not one of Canberra's strong points so I suggest you rent yourself a small hire car. Taxi prices are exorbitant so a hire car will be cheaper. Depending on what you want to spend there is a Formule 1 in the northern areas. Queanbeyan might be a bit cheaper and it is close to the airport. The advice about following the Hume is a life saver if the weather gets nasty, plenty of alternates and low terrain if it all gets too hard. If you are IFR it is still a good idea to plan via Yass for the same reasons. Hope it goes well.

Thanks for the responses all, keep 'em coming!! - sorry my initial query raised eyebrows. By saying I was familiar with a GAAP airport and (limited) Essendon, I was trying to illustrate that yes, I am familiar with CTA and Towers - just haven't been anywhere as probably as busy in CTA and YSCB. I wasn't trying to imply YSCB is GAAP.

Wan: thanks for the advice re 30miles.

What about ground handling?

YSCB is not particularly GA friendly as theres not enough profit in GA operations for the AP owner, sure your tolerated but don't expect any favours.

Park your AC on the grass at the western end of the GA apron, taxi into the GA apron (not down Taxiway C) and keep on going past Brindabella airlines new hangar and you'll see the other GA aircraft on the grass, its 1/2 the cost of the hardstand rate. Ties down cables are on the grassed area as well as sand buckets for your fuel drains.

They have a drive-in 100LL bowser there that accepts most cards, if in doubt call the safety officer (SO) 6275 2215 and he will assist. Shell have a tanker if you prefer that, but they do not refuel on the grass. Taxi clearance is not required within the confines of the GA area so just give her some herbs and manoeuvre as req.

The guys in the Tower are great and just let them know you are unfamiliar with CBR and they'll guide you right in.

You will need the SO to let you back in so bring your ASIC!

The taxiways in and out of the GA area can be a little confusing. Look out for runway 12/30 as it is parallel to the main taxiway in and out. Just tell them you are unfamiliar and say "no" to runway incursions...

Don't just call at 30 miles - as Wan said, check the airspace. It is not just circles around Canberra - there are other agencies that own airspace around there too depending on what height you are. The area frequency between Albury (watch the steps there too) and Canberra is Melbourne Centre 119.5. You can ask them for flight following as the radar coverage is pretty good there and they will be able to assist with frequency transfers for clearances.

The approach controllers there are pretty good blokes (hello boys) and will be able to assist if you let them know you need a hand.

Have fun and enjoy the scenery.

Cheers,

NFR.
