RIP..S/O found dead in crew hotel
Nunc est bibendum
Your intentions were probably honourable but please keep in mind that many of us have friends in town and like me may be quite startled by such news and not sure of whom you speak. I've just spent the last 30 minutes trying to track down a S/O mate trying to make sure he was OK. He is but my point is that until the details have been released publicly by family/friends/company then such posts as yours can cause quite a lot of distress.

Keg, mate, you really need to stop being so precious. This is no different to hearing the news through the TV, radio or hearing the scuttlebutt on the flight deck or in a crew room. No name was mentioned, only that this has happened. I'm assuming it is true. Yep, death is sad and distressing, and sad and distressing news spreads rapidly in this interconnected world. That's reality. If it actually encourages people to touch base with friends, say "Hi, was thinking of you, are you ok?", well maybe that's a small positive to come out of a tragedy?
Provided family/close friends don't learn of someone's death via PPrune I really don't see the problem in mentioning this here. If you do see a problem, well you'd better start banning people talking about it at sign-on, or at FL370, Fatties, etc.
This is one of the saddest things I can think of - dying in a slip port hotel. I'll be thinking about this all today....

R&EJ, we'll have to agree to disagree. Until there has been some sort of public announcement from either the company or the family- and the fact that people are not using names and only posting initials indicate that it is not 'public' knowledge yet- then I reckon it's not appropriate to be either startling others due to lack of information or putting initials into the public domain.
I'm more comfortable than most with the issue of death and I don't shy away from it as a part of life. I just reckon it needs to be dealt with sensitively than what it has been thus far on this thread.

Nah, I'm with Keg on this one. That's totally low. We don't need rampant speculation as to cause of death or circumstances.
Moderators, please do the right thing and can this whole thread.

I have reinstated this thread as details of the person concerned have been publicly released. Please think carefully before hitting the submit button.

I'm with Ron, its relevant news, proves how well the pprune bush telegraph works.
Condolences to the family.
Kangaroo Court, what are you talking about, "Rampant Speculation".
Learning to cope with death is a part of life, don't be so precious.
Agree'd, this is one of the saddest things I can think of - dying in a slip port hotel. I'll also be thinking about this all today....

I put this up before but it got wiped.
Playing devils advocate.
What is the difference between putting this up or putting up a plane crash, say "5 minutes ago a cessna 206 crashed in Townsville". This type of post goes up all of the time.
You would then get people worried because they know someone who flies a 206 in Townsville.
It just seems to be hipocritical to me.
By the way, condolences to family and friends involved.

This is an absolute tragedy .... the S/O in question was a great bloke, superb operator and will be sorely missed.
Have only just heard the news myself, am struggling with it a bit.

Av8tr, there probably is no difference but then again I reckon the posting of those types of news items aren't great either.
That said, a possible subtle difference is that often the news of the 206 prang has also been concurrently reported by the media and thus is already in the public domain. This information about the QF S/O was not in the public domain and hadn't been confirmed by any reputable source. In short, we expect journo's to be bottom feeding scum who leap at any unfortunate event that occurs. I'm not sure that we can use that to justify that kind of behaviour in ourselves.
My condolences, thoughts and prayers to the S/O's family and friends. My thoughts and prayers also go out to the S/O's crew- particularly the other S/O who knew him quite well.

sorry to hear
Have to agree with keg on this one.
A mate passed away recently in a chopper crash, was posted on pprune very shortly afterwards by someone flying thru the area and well before anything had been confirmed. friends of the deceased pilot saw it on pprune, worked out who it was from details given and then proceeded to call the wife, who had not been notified by police or the company. please be very very careful what you write and think about it before you hit submit, as there are proper channels to go thru to notify next of kin without someone calling to offer their condolences before that occurs. imagine if you or your loved ones were in that position. my two cents worth.
My condolences to the family of the s/o
