Pilot shortage coming to an end in Aus?

I have seen three entry level jobs advertised in the last week, if these type of adds start to drop off, then I would say the shortage is over, but not yet!
Airlines are still interviewing, I know of four people who got start dates with the airlines this week! Of course the events of the last week or two may have a flow on effect...

The airline recruitment is on hold right now in some company's, plus the credit crisis may hurt a lot of airline expansion plans due to the fact that no-one is lending any money to buy nice new shiny jets. As the movement to the top of the pile stops, the guys below are staying in the regionals longer, which will the stop movement from piston twins, then piston singles.
On a positive note, its still expensive to train a pilot, and with a dim outlook on progression, it may turn a lot of guys off, plus there are still a lot of delivery's due for Australian airlines, so there will still be plenty of opportunity in the coming years maybe not like it was late last year, early this year, but still moving along.

dont forget the fact that if, or when the depression sets in, new students will be few and far between, so when things do turn around, the shortage will be even more exacerbated

hmmmmm last i heard was the guys with start dates at QF for late this year had calls telling them these start dates were to be pushed back. Virgin were accepting interest along with Jetstar, tiger were having a prowl also although nothing set in stone?

Melbourne airport (Tullamarine) recently postphoned their multimillion dollar refurbishment / expansion due to economic pressures causing people to not travel by air. If their theory pans out there won't be many pilots required.

I was wondering if all the doom and gloom in the current world financial crisis would effect aviation. I guess it will eventually, as flying will be seen as an expense to be avoided. I hope the commodity prices don't slump too much or there will be a few unemployed pilots around these parts pretty quickly.

Just had brunch with an EK Captain mate here in DXB...EK has stopped recruiting although people already successfully interviewed will probably be ok. A combination of the Boeing strike/Interior finishing company going broke slowing 777 deliveries and the general downturn.
Interestingly had beers the other night with several mates who are fleet managers with Netjets ME (G4/DA2000/Hawker 800s) and they are still recruiting and in expansion mode. But oil rich arabs in the Gulf States are unlikely to feel this recession to any great extent.

Keep your eyes open there have been plenty recently, capital city papers, (NT News often has them), careeone, jobsearch!

Ofcourse the shortage will end as will the trades shortages and any other job for that matter. That's what a downturn/recession is: unemployment goes up as sales drop off and companies lay off workers = less money around for things like holidays = less pilots required. Unless things turn around in the very near future which is looking unlikely you will see the start of it in about 6 to 12months time as there is always a lag in conditions filtering through. Ask anyone who was around in the late 80's.

I'd imagine passenger numbers will soften with all that's going on financially, although keep in mind a month ago we were all worrying about oil costs, which have since halved from their peak. Could well be a zero sum game when you factor the two together. I read a few lines in the paper last week, that some legacy carriers are losing business travel to LCC's as company spending is scaled back.
