Light Aircraft Crash near Bombala

From NEWS Limited Breaking News: Man frees himself from plane wreck

October 09, 2008 01:22pm

THE pilot of a light aircraft suffered suspected spinal injuries when he crash landed his plane in a paddock 400 metres short of an airstrip in southern NSW today.

Emergency crews received a triple-0 call just after 9.30am (AEDT) today saying a plane had crashed west of Bombala Airport, a NSW Ambulance Service spokesman said.

Paramedic crews arrived to find the plane's only occupant had got himself out of the aircraft.

An ambulance helicopter was sent to the scene, but the man was taken by road ambulance to the nearby Bombala Hospital.

He was being treated for internal chest injuries and suspected spinal injuries, and was in a serious but stable condition.

His injuries were not thought to be life threatening, police said.

The ambulance spokesman said the man would be stabilised and assessed to see if he should be airlifted to a major hospital trauma centre.

A police spokesman said the man was flying the light aircraft over Bombala when its engine failed.

He glided the plane towards the air strip but crash-landed short of the runway.

A spokeswoman for the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said it would not be investigating the incident.

Maybe that bloke can post on the engine failure thread. Assuming it was not suffering from a shortage of hydrocarbons that is.

Hope he recovers soon!
