Question about the dump'n'burn...

After seeing riverfire.. just then, my sister called to ask me a question:

How does the F-111 go from the first pass to the 2nd.

is it,
a) two aircraft - one for each flyby
b) the same aircraft - stops for refuelling and then comes back after filling up again (because i know the dump'n'burn uses a crapload of fuel)
c) the same aircraft - goes into a holding pattern for 20 mins and then goes for the 2nd run?

and one other question:
Do they do carbon offsets for the riverfire dump'n'burn?

I think you'll find its one aircraft. It may take a lot of fuel for a dump and burn but the Pig can carry an awful lot of fuel. With sensible flying (ie no burner) a single jet would carry plenty for both passes...

I herd, probably flase, but an F111 can do a max of 4 dump and burns and still have some flying time.... (including fly-by's etc)

Any truth?

One Jet

I flew Riverfire in 2004 and you only need one jet for the two flypasts, although that year we actually had two, putting one up each side of the city. The internal fuel load of the F-111 is 32,000 lbs, and from memory the Pig would use between 4-6,000 lbs per D&B, depending on the amount of time you keep the fuel dump switch open in the climb.

After the first flypast the jet(s) just saunter back down to their hold around Mt Tamborine and wait for the next flypast. You can expect a few minutes before your run in to have ATC want to move your holding pattern (which you have negotiated & briefed numerous times during the week) 20nm East to facilitate the arrival of the only B-737 in the airspace!

The Pig has done many high profile Dump & Burns from Amberley to places South like Sydney, Canberra without the need for a refuel. There's plenty of gas to get there, hold for 20 mins, make the pass and come home. For refuelling the Pig needs a boom tanker, so until the arrival of the RAAF KC-30B you need a USAF tanker to be in-country and available, which isn't very likely.

Ah, Okay, Cool
Two other questions:
1) How much does a pass usually cost?
2) Is the rumour I heard true, that when there are two aircraft, the two pilots have a competition to see who can pull the highest G's on the "pull up"?

No Idea about the cost, I imagine that would be more expensive these days, just work out the fuel costs, that should be pretty close to accurate,

But the rumor, Well they shouldnt, and usually no (from speaking to RAAF Officers in the flight line) but there are a few pilots who "attempt" this....

Here is the news story stating that the council actually bought carbon offsets for the fire works and dump and burn.

That is an awesome photo. Watching the pig that night brought a huge grin to my face. I can't wait for the AMB airshow.

Ah okay. I might have alook around and go there next year. Hopefully they'll have two F-111's again before they depart our skies for good.

The camera skills are easy. It's more a matter of having the right equipment:
  • DSLR or equivalent that can take a time exposure shot or has a "bulb" setting
  • tripod
  • cable or remote shutter release
  • good vantage point.

I dare say when they retire the F-111s Brisbane will get the final flypast (as has been done for the 707s this year).

As it's the final flypast we could see a number in formation - 4 or maybe even more (unlikely to have that many servicable though).

The question is whether it will be a day flypast or night inc. dump & burn.

It will be a very sad day for the RAAF and the country when the pigs are gone.
