"yes its 1500TT but of which, 1300 is international flying with 60 stations on the network, on the 744 with clean records. Now think about it for a minute."

Thought about it, still scared. . 1300 hrs on the 744 is probably about 180 sectors, so maybe 90 approaches and landings? I assume also that you weren't actually doing said approaches and landings but merely observing them? I hope so or I really will be scared of flying SQ.

Most of the guys in Air NZ needed 1300hrs on singles before they got a job on a piston twin, 1000hrs later they get a turbo prop job and onto a jet a bit later. Now think about it for a minute.
Not havin a go at you mate, more power to you for getting in there and starting what will be a great career, just pointing out that you won't find any 1500hr pilots in the Air NZ jet fleet.

with cargo now. so its about 100sectors a year. sectors are from SHJ - LHR - CPH/AMS to long ones like ORD to HKG. So its a good mix.

Sick of flying?? Now that career is on path, i should be thinking of doing what i want WHERE i want, especially when i'm holding the triump card. If i have to break the bond, so be it. money can be earned. Having lived in both countries, i much prefer NZ's quality of life.

I know in CX, SOs sits behind. Surely not here. Life is rather good here, people easy to work with but i after more than that. Living is more important.

Always thought New Zealanders were positive people. But wait.. was that a Kiwi replying to me?

Ok then, in answer to your question, you will not get a 744 FO position in New Zealand. No I am not a Kiwi but have a fair knowledge of how the system works.

Winglet Fever..

Best to probably stay where you are.. as you'll have a career path.
I wouldn't exactly say S/O time is a trump card though...

Maybe not where you want to live.. but you do have staff travel right?

Air NZ is pretty much a closed shop.. it's all the old boys network, or you've come up through the Air NZ Link group.. thats just the way they do things..

Yes things are done differently in Singapore or most of the world.. but not in NZ or Australia, rightly or wrongly so..

Don't let some of the responses get to you.. refuelling planes makes some people bitter and twisted....

Hi Winglet,

If you have NZ PR then Air NZ is an option. However the only entry points for the airline are B733 first officer and wide body second officer B777, B767 and B747 (no flying below 10,000 or transition)

The B744 will be phased out over the next 4.5 years and a large number of current B744 Captain, First Officers and Second officers have been down trained to the B777 as of next month.

All the application details are on the Air NZ website, so spin the dice and have a go, if that what you want to aim for.

Good Luck

Cypher and c100driver,

trump card is not with regards to hours only. It also because i also have another 35 to 40 years of useful life to the company with a rating.

If only NZ is nearer to where i am, or if SQ had a stable lifestyle roster. 10hours to get home can be a little tricky. B737 will do me just fine especially at this stage of the game. We sometimes gotta trade off for what we want.

Thanks again.

I think 2000hrs is the minimum at the moment for Air NZ. They have been doing a bit of hiring lately. There is no reason why after you have met their minimums that you shouldn't get an interview. If you got on the 73 you would clock up your annual total of 100 sectors in about two months I reckon. Nothing like 5 sectors with 30 min turn arounds on each one to get the ex long haul folk workin

i'm quite sure about that. Really wonder how am i going to stick the sandwich down with 3 min cruise time.

long haul flying is like semi retirement job. think i'm a little too young for that at the moment.

Will look up for more info.

Cheers

Winglet,

Go for it dude, apply away, attitude is everything great to see your positiveness in an industry which can at times harbour bitterness, sourness and negativity.

As for the 300 hours straight into a wide body, well done! Given the chance many people would jump at it. Its the norm in so many places.

I do feel for guys/gals that have not had the chance for some real good fun bush flying though... But each to their own!

Hi Pluto,

We cannot have the best of everything but we sure can work towards it.

Having done my short tour on GA level, i know i've had it easy. And on that same note, i lost out a lot too. Its a huge chunk of pain/joy/excitement/experience/employment in between that i've missed out.

The irony of it all is, my ex-course mates in NZ are trying to get out to get a job while i'm trying to get back in. Life. What is fair/correct/what it should be??? i guess it depends on where your datum is. Being positive leads to happiness. Thats my motto.

Hey tinpis,19 years a lot of Aussies helped out SQ whose arse was over a barrel due to a pilot shortage. In fact SQ pilots were about to get a big pay rise. As Captain Richard Tan (743 Fleet Manager) said about all the dispute pilots coming to Singapore.
It was like manna from Heavan

New Zealand is indeed green and pleasant from what little I've seen of it. Quiet and peaceful with spectacular scenery. Basically the opposite of what you're used to in Singapore.

But, this all comes at a price. I'd guess your tax bill is around 7 or 8% of your salary at the moment. Now in NZ it will be just a bit more, if their rates are similar to Aussie ones reckon on giving up 35 - 45% in total depending on your circumstances.

Why not stay at SQ, save and invest wisely and retire in NZ instead ?

A nice little cottage in South Island, mountains in the background, overlooking the sea. Find the right spot, get in when prices are down. Spend holidays there, just be careful of being classed as resident for tax purposes. When you hang up your wings, move over there full time. Financially you will be way ahead.

i've thought of that before but i really want to walk a step slower before i have to walk at that pace if you get what i mean. Schools great here however i want my kids to enjoy their childhood, learn at their pace and breath the freshness of the dew.

lived at my friend's orange farm couple of years back for 3-4 months down at gissy and i loved it. till now, whenever i fly to AKL with 3 nights layover, i still drive there even for a night.

i dont live the high life with expensive toys or food, so as long as options are still open for my foot-in, i'm weighing my calling to tax rate.. furthermore, i like NZ for how it was 6 years back, i'm not sure if i'll like it for how it will be. like they say, the clock doesn't turn anticlockwise.

Thanks again for your kind note.
