Avalon to Croydon, Melbourne, Vic.

Please forgive the indulgence from a would be first time traveller to the Melbourne area some time next March. By road how long is a car drive, approximately, between the airport at Avalon and the Croydon area in Melbourne.

Thank you and greetings from Cork.

About an hour, provided you don't want to do it at peak hour on a week day (8,00am 9.00am, 4.00pm - 6pm)

Thank you, Sunfish, for the update. Should be booking our flights tomorrow, hopefully, and one of our connections is likely to be Perth to Avalon from JetStar.

It is getting exciting now.

The roads you'll need to take are littered with speed camera's, especially the freeway to Avalon

Take care my friend. 3 kph over the limit and they'll nail you.

from Google Maps..
Driving directions to Croydon VIC, 96.3 km – about 1 hour 36 mins
I suggest fifteen minutes less on clear roads and up to an hour more in peak times

Aussie Nick,

Jetstar fly to the capitals out of AV and to the regionals out of ML. Does that mean they consider Darwin not to be a capital?

Walrus 7 that is strange. It may have something to do with curfews since darwin doesn't have one. It would be odd of J* to classify the capital of the NT as a regional airport. A quick search of J*'s website shows flights to darwin of a evening and mid day.....

On a foreign driver's licence? The registered owner of the car only has to provide a stat dec with the (supposed) details of the foreign driver. End of story (unless they have somehow tightened up on that loophole)...

Thanks, lads, all your posts have been helpful and have made interesting reading. We have now booked our tickets to Melbourne and Qantas have removed our connection option at Perth and are sending us via Sydney instead into Tullamarine. We are taking the option of a two day stopover in Sydney on the way to see the sights.

Hope to see yez all around St Patrick's Day next year!

3 km/h over, what a load of tripe!

3 km/h over is the booked speed, not the alleged speed which is 2kmh higher. With speedo error etc, you'd have to be doing 68 in a 60 zone to get busted.

Enjoy your trip and as posted, don't get excited about Avalon, that's for sure!

Sorry my mistake XXX,

Forgot to add the error correction. But I personally will still never trust them.

But remember the people your dealing with here as well,

Speed Cameras - Speed Camera News & Information Police Speed Camera Locations

Vanessa Bridges was one of the first to challenge the accuracy of fixed speed cameras on Melbourne's Western Ring Road six months ago. Vanessa's car was clocked at 158km/h by a fixed camera - a speed she knew was well beyond the 4-cylinder Datsun 120Y which has been putting along for close to 30 years. After unsuccessfully querying the fine, Vanessa faced a mandatory loss of licence, but rather than trusting the technology she sought another opinion.

Speed Cameras VANESSA BRIDGES:"We got the car tested not only for the maximum speed it could go, which we found out it could only be 117km/h, but we also did a test on the actual speedometer and we found that when the needle was on 100 the car was actually only doing 90. The police still dug their heels in and they said, "Oh, no, no no, the fine still stays.

The police were not dropping the fine at all," and I even ended up receiving a letter in the mail saying that, "Oh, yes, the letter of rejection has been accepted and your court date will be advised shortly."

So, it was very stressful and I was basically treated like a criminal, and it was horrible - absolutely horrible.

Cheers,
