NZ to Australia conversion
Hi there,
I've been living in the uk for the past 5 years and it's finaly time to move back to the southern hemisphere. I have a NZ cpl and want to convert it to an Australian cpl and start flying over there. Problem is I'm hugely out of NZ IRF currency (I'm current in the uk but I havn't done any renewal in nz since i left) and law exam has expired along with my medical.
My question is - how much of this stuff needs to be current to convert my licence? I mean, if it needs doing, it needs doing. Just trying to avoid un-necessary spending.

Impossible to know what you need as it depends on experience level etc. Suggest you get to the CASA website Civil Aviation Safety Authority and pose your question there. Ensure sufficient detail so someone in the flight crew licencing section can make a reasobable estimation of what you will need to do to obtain an Australian CPL and presumably a multi-engine command instrument rating. They are normally very helpful in such matters. Just make sure if you go ahead you carefully select the flying school in your area of living as rip-offs have been known to happen. On the same basis, once you know where you are going to settle in Australia, go back on Pprune history pages to find out info on reputable flying school operators. There are many very sound schools around - but the occasional dodgy ones as well. My bet is you need to allow at least $20,000 Aust to get up to scratch including CIR. 10 hours in a Duchess will set you back at least $5000 for a start.

Having gone through exactly the same process around 1 year ago - I can tell you that everything you want converted, must be current. This includes your NZ medical.

It's a pretty painless process, the only real cost coming from the Australian embassy charging ridiculous prices to certify the documents required.

Yep - having done it a few years ago , everything that you want convert must be current, if you haven't done a NZ BFR in the last 5 years then your stuck with having to sit and pass NZ CPL Law again 
other than that it's as simple as turning up to a CASA office and forking over a few $$$ 
and the paper work

p.s don't get it done at an Australian embassy as they charge like bulls, they wanted every page of my logbook copied at $25 per page, at the time I had 3 logbooks, so you do the Math
My 2 cents worth - get current in NZ , forget the Aust Embassy and go straight to CASA, their Banktown Office (Sydney) were very helpful, just make sure you have all your I's doted and T's crossed re: your paper work before you go.

You can convert your cpl across, however you can't fly on a NZ class 1 medical doing comercial work in ozzie. (if you can than i got scammed lol)
you can fly privatly on your NZ medical however.
maybe just do your law and instrument stuff in nz. but just do your medical in ozzie.
they will make you do an initial again anyway as soon as it comes up.

Was told by Casa that could fly on NZ Class 1 untill it expired then had to go the Oz one.
All my paper work was filled in at the CASA office in perth and they wittnessed all the paper work there on the spot befor sending it away to the head office. All very painless.

Get the docs certified by a Auzzie qualified lawyer in Auckland, and get it done for next to nothing. Get the security ID stuff done as well at the same time, as that takes the longest to process in Auz.
Yes, first year you can run on the NZ medical.

Certified Auzzie qualified lawyers
Gidday Gidday Mr. DeltaT & all,
I'm now finally at the stage to convert my kiwi over to the OZ one with everything nice and current again. I even got that stupid English test pass so I could pay $99 to watch the examineer play solaitre on her computer next to me while I spoke into an answer machine. I just don't know what the world is coming to these days
Am in Auckland for a little over a week before heading down to Christchurch and was hoping that someone might please be able to point me in the direction of said qualified Auzzie lawyer so I can get my papers all validated before sending them off.

Does this mean you found a good operator in oz?
If you carry on a little further south I know of a chemist in Dunedin that is OZ qualified and can therefore certify the documents, but I doubt it would be worth the extra drive unless youre going that way anyway.

Couldn't help myself GleKichi. From what we saw every seaplane operator in Oz was good - I mean seaplanes & Oz - goes together just like shrimp on the barbie
Thanks for the offer of your Dunedin contact. Luckily we won't have to drive down and get tangled up in the undie 500 as we managed to find an Australian lawyer in Auckland. Today she signed and verified away (hopefully) to CASA's content. Bill's in the mail she said with a smile :-)
