Will there be a downturn in GA ?

I hope it doesn't happen, but since Qantas & Virgin Blue have been recently affected by high oil prices, economic uncertainty etc, how will Australian GA be affected? I am about to sign up for a full time MECIR course. Interesting times !

The aviation industry is well-known to be cyclical, with the demand for pilots obviously subject to that movement. However, like the share market, the demand and growth of air-travel will continue, with the overall result over-shaddowing any period of decline.

From all accounts GA companies are screaming out for pilots, offering increased wages (most well above award). The number of piston job advertised each week on afap alone shows the many oppurtunities that are out there for low-time pilots. A signifcant portion of GA (especially around Broome, Darwin and Cairns) survives on government and resource sector contracts, where the price of oil doesn't have the same financial and operational impact as it does on commercial carriers.

I would recommend training while the industry has slowed, securing a job with a reputable GA company offering good T&Cs and progression, and hopefully be in a qualified position when the industry bounces back and the airlines at all levels are employing again.
