Ask Bendo, I think (from a very vague memory of the event) that he ended-up with some of the pprune badges at Warbirds 2001. Now, the way that they ended-up here in Australia is a story in itself - ask OzExpat just how many "beers" (irony in itself) he had to go through to get them over there when those delightful proprietors of this site decided to sozzle our poor OzExpat into a stupor - and also Sprocket for the details of how they transited into Oz. They might have beed lost during the late night 4 wheeled runway incursion....

I may actually have one here somewhere still, I'll have a look.

This username of mine is the product of one of the many early server meltdown where the original username (circa 1998?) got lost in all the confusion. That username occasionally had a bit too much to say for himself.

I still reckon we should have had a "Reckless" Kelly.....

Regards,

OpsN.

Yes my previous entity, Mountain Man, disappeared about the time of the great server meltdown. Still he had served his purpose and died with honour

The 89' thread has been rolling along without any problems, as I'm sure you would all agree, including a few posts from moderator John Tullamarine who has been around from day 1.

And then, bingo!!...our old mate Tidbinbilla, the mod who seems to dislike pilots, steps in and closes down the thread and slaps JT in the face at the same time!

Don't know about you, but I reckon it's about time the powers to be took a good look at Tid re his suitabillity as a mod![/
COLOR]

So amos that was your original thread starter, now you have gone all soft just because Tidbinbilla is female!

Hopefully Tids will reach Debbies lofty standard!

Nothing like a good backflip every now and then. Maybe the powers that be would accept an apology from you

So Perm, tell me, are you suggesting a "Sorry" type apology?

Is there something that you know, that we don't?

I reckon your current prune identity is much better than the old one Chuckles.

Too many pub jokes could be made about the old one...

ABX............

Lots of the old posters ended up with new identities. Same with the user-post 'speedos'............most long-term PPRuNer's ended up with a post 'speedo' 'haircut' in about (guessing here) 2003?

My PPRuNe identity has remained constant since I joined in Nov 1998.

I've seen a lot of changes since then, some good, some bad (in my view). What I really regret, though, is the disappearance of the old-style posts of the 90's where a no-holds-barred, take-no-prisoner-appraoch, rip-into others 'flavour' (coupled with liberal doses of extraction of urine thrown in for good measure) prevailed.

Classic posters such as Blackadder, ISO, Ykikamoocow, Slasher (see Slash was recently back tho') etc etc.

Mods...........thanks for doing a good job!

Now look, we are still into foreplay here!

Are the Mods going to reinstate the 89' thread or not?

No Offence

I knew the meaning of your current identity. Twas just a few old jokes that routinely pop into the old noggin when reminded.

I have a few mates who are ex-lumberjacks. Men who worked in the mountains. Mountain men. It is these blokes who have been on the receiving end of the mountain man jokes and it is them who told them to me over a few drinks.

Cheers

Taily, you forgot the first non UK resident moderator. The one with the task of "moderating" D&G.

"Southern Comfort".

Probably eight to ten years ago, in the days of Slasher (who posted recently), Redo (who is still active), Jazzi, Ykikamoocow, Blackadder (who is still around), CaptIFsnailtrail, Windy et al, PPRuNe was not a place for the faint hearted.

"...old-style posts of the 90's where a no-holds-barred, take-no-prisoner-appraoch, rip-into others 'flavour' (coupled with liberal doses of extraction of urine thrown in for good measure) prevailed."
PPRuNe was very different then. We had far fewer users (10,000th user registered in January, 2000; now 235,000 registered users), one tended to know most of the local users who were generally older, more experienced and wiser airline crews. We had almost no inexperienced and/or young "newbies" wanting to see their name up in print or those intent on building their post count with meaningless one liners. It was a totally different ethos.

Less users, more experienced, mostly professional airline pilots = less moderating.

The moderating task was far easier, far fewer posts - unlike the 130,000 "page hits" we now get each day on Dunnunda Forum alone. Users were far more "self regulating", more aware of the rules and how far they could go....

Unfortunately, we can't let PPRuNe return to the way it was, as it is now far too big and all controls and decorum would be lost. Besides, now PPRuNe is probably the World's largest aviation forum of it's type, it also now attracts far more media attention - and quite a few more lawyers letters.......

But mostly, it's still a fun and informative forum for those involved in aviation Dunnunda.

Are you sure about that, tailwheel? I always thought my original nick of Radar Departure, followed by Radar Departure2 after some sort of hiccup within the system, was in 1999, and that I was in the 12,000 range. Perhaps I seek a higher level of seniority than is due to me. Vanity is such a curse.

In the unlikely event anyone is interested, the original RD used total anonymity and utter lies about his whereabouts to disguise his identity so he could be as controversial as he wanted to be. His first post was so abusive towards Slasher that speculation immediately focused on whether he was in fact Sunshine or Coconuts orCeltic Emerald or whatever she eventually became.

I know RD remembers feeling rather aggrieved at this but remembers Velvet springing to his defence and denying that possibility because I, sorry, he was capable of constructing a sentence correctly.

Binoculars was born when I decided I needed to state my credentials if I were to have any credibility on certain matters, and the two identities co-existed uneasily for a while, with the inevitable slip-up every now and then, especially in chat where I once logged on separately and talked to myself to still mounting suspicion that we were in fact the same person. Let me tell you that one got tricky on Tuesday nights.

RD was always rather more combative than the voice of reason that was Binos, but as has become fairly obvious over the intervening years, Binos has come to display his true colours and has been known to get down in the gutter with the best of them, verbally speaking.

After that slight thread drift, I will say that the Pprune archives that I have a link to contains some fascinating material concerning 1989 written at the time of Ansett's demise, rather than Kaptin M's initial thread, which I can't find. If any younger members want the link feel free to ask. All the good Kaptin's posts have been deleted from said threads for whatever reason.

Cheers to old online friends, wherever you may be.

Edited to add: Tinpis, Capt Vegemite (slaps head; duhhhh) God I'm getting slow in my old age.

The great server meltdown of the late 90's cost seniority and a name change for more than a few of us. The comment made about the lesser requirement for 'moderation' back then due to a slightly different demographic is very accurate. The moderators have come and gone, but all have done/do a good job considering the sheer volume of posts. Danny's rules were simple at the start, and really they still are.If we all followed them then maybe Pprune could get back to the generally higher standard of posting that used to be found.

Tailwheel,

I beg to differ about the ease of moderating D&G in the early days. There was only 1 person, (me), and there was a lot of fur flying over 1989 and Jet Craft/ Tran state et al.

This seems as good a time as any to ask, why is M*ca*r a censored word, and can we have it back, please?

I think I can safely say, Mr Rhinus, that the founder of said airline objected to certain implications posted about his outfit and threatened legal action if it were ever mentioned by name.

I had an interesting, if short conversation with said Mr Mac one night. I had known that he hated ATC with a passion, and later found out that he had failed an ATC course, so naturally when I was introduced to him I innocently asked him about his ATC experience.

As I said, it was a short conversation.

Ah yes, that days of yore and the tuesday night chat with Bino's. Was indeed always interesting ..

Dear Jazzi, had the pleasure of dining with her last year and she was looking/doing great!

Reddo .. how appropriate (coz you don't drink much) ...

235,000 members? Crikey! I remember when it was a big deal for the 4000th!!

and .. The Panel .. god bless the Panel .. obviously that worked for one particular couple as it led to a more formalised union!!

The server crashes and important things like your number of posts being lost ..

But always, ALWAYS - despite the idiocy of some, still a great way to start or end the day with a little bit of reading about what some will call their passion - aviation and all things relative to it.

other blasts from the past .. Skypig, Kapton Kaos, GoGirl, Disco Stu

Sorry about the thread creep ..
