Installation near THR RWY 16 at Melbourne
A repost, the original degenerated into a reasonably amusing series of observations about some members of the community's attachment for the musical form known as 'doof doof' and a likely link to this installation. Please put any more posts along those lines where that thread now is: Jetblast. Flying Spike's post almost made me cack myself, circle work indeed...

These appeared a while ago alongside the Sunbury road, well short of the 16 threshold at Melbourne. They appear to have been lashed up out of marine ply, foam plastic and tek screws in a very temporary/improvised fashion and each have a line of pa-type speakers inside. The equipment hut has what looks like a rack of routers and a couple of pc and a radio link.
I figured they are some sort of bird frighteners. Other submissions:
Ultimate Fallback communications: "Not here Speedbirdxxx, over THERE!"
Ground based active noise reduction,
any other ideas?

ps. One poster chided me for breaching security by placing these details in a forum open to birds - please cover your budgie's cage while reading this.

Take some bolt cutters, chop your way in, pick the lock, and sit in the donga.
Its bound to be alarmed and monitored, so when they come to see who is there, ask them!
Its all in the national pprune interest of course!

That's just absolutally brilliant Jabba!
It had to be someone like yourself to come up with such a bright idea.
If i lived in Melbourne i'd give it a go myself.
Go for it Fokker, let us know how you went!

Could this be some sort of SODAR equipment?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SODAR
Is this approach prone to wind shear or turbulence?

it's quite obvious as to what they are. There the new staff seats for the QF engineers, you see with their up & coming huge payrise demands(outrageous 5 %) GD doesn't want them to sit for a minute so he (GD) can get more productivity out of them therefore justifying the monsterous increase in operating costs by way of a wage break out And if by chance that the engineers do manage to sit upon those sharp objects GD has an alt plan, yelling so those megaphones scare off the guys back to the slave labour camp at QF Then again they could be an anti-terrorist device, you see the terrorists will just stand there at the fence line with B*** in hand in utter amazement like all the other people standing there inc security guards & wonder WTF are they, then the security guards will pounce on them but not before checking their ASICS only to find out their really the hired engineers

Qantas management have installed them so that they can monitor productivity out of the last remaining employees before replacing them with new staff.
Perhaps they are their to keep the dreaded planespotters away from the flightpath so that they can't photograph aircraft and then put the photos on websites?

Following recieved from somebody who doesn't seem to want to be quoted:
"They're experimental instrumentation for detecting wake turbulence, apparently. The aim eventually being to reduce the required spacing on final depending on the conditions of the day."
The guesses about circle work were accurate, but only wingtip circles
