Another runway Light Issue
Anyone heard about problem with runway lights at YMHB earlier this week and a diversion of a B737 back to YMML?
Both the main power and backup generators failed.

In the early hours of Thursday morning a B737 freighter arrived at Hobart, and then diverted to Launceston due to a complete failure of the runway lights and standby generator system.

Why do I get the feeling that Australians were the first to develop the habit of taking the issp!

Back to the serious side, not a nice feeling to arrive to find no lights and then have an unscheduled diversion to a aerodrome that requires an alternate. was it a failure of the system(s), ie primary failure followed by a failure of the back up system, or did the system take a strike from the TS in the area? No doubt it will be subject of a ATSB report.

Would have been an interesting situation if both YMLT and YMML had fog.
I was under the impression if the primary lights failed due to a power failure or surge that the generator powered system came on line straight away.

If the lighting failure was caused by a problem in the field circuit, such as lightning strike, then it doesn't matter how many back up generators automatically kick in, the power won't get to the light fittings. Some of the major aerodromes now have two field circuits, so that if one fails, then at least every second runway edge light should be available until the problem is fixed.
