New service for Port Augusta

In a rather short report, titled Augusta air contract, at the bottom of page 5 of the South Australian 'Advertiser' newspaper on Tuesday the 4th of March it was announced that 'Sharp Airlines will fly between Port Augusta and Adelaide from April 28.'

The third and last paragraph reads;

Sharp Airlines was awarded the contract for the route yesterday and will initially fly a 19-seat aircraft to Port Augusta on weekdays. The airline already operates in regional Victoria'

A bit interesting. I wonder if Air South had put in a tender as I would have thought that they would have been interested in that route.

They'll be doing well if they can even half fill a metro on that route!

Port Augusta on it's own will lose them heaps but they may have plans to also go via Whyalla and replace O'Conner or extend to Roxby and Prominent Hill in which case so long as they have contracts with BHP etc they will be ok. I believe the contract runs to the mines now are paid by the flight not the payload.

If they're only going to do Port Augusta then I give them 6 months at the most before they fold! And yes, to the best of my knowledge Air South did tender for it.

I would also be surprised if Port Augusta could support a Metro operation.

Does anyone do a regular run to Leigh Creek these days?

I believe Rossair does a twice weekly (Mon & Fri) run, usually in the Reims 406but sometimes a Conquest. A few seats available sometimes to "outsiders", but it's mainly for the NRG heirarchy & the doctor, dentist, physio etc.

It exists because of the coal mine there.

Devil

Tinpis; What a terrible thing to say!!

That town supports one of the best Indian restaurants I've been to!

There's a quite good Chinese place as well.

You know Pinky, funny you should mention that. Upon a visit to the 'Gutta in 2006, I had the Indian restaurant recommended to me for a feed, but, unfortunately time constraints didn't permit a visit. But it must be good if it's been spoken of around the country, .

I was working out of the 'gutta' some years ago now & was told to not venture out after dark, must be risky trying the culinary delights of the 'gutta' eat outs!
Does someone still do the mail runs from the 'gutta'?

'tinpis' yr a crack up !

Don't know who told you that flyitboy but I never had anyproblems around the place after dark. But that may be because I never went near any of the less salubrious establishments. Only pub I ever frequented was the West Side and that was mainly the Dining Room.

As for the mail run; Mt Isa based West Wing Aviation currently do what remains of the old run that the defunct Airlines of SA used to operate. It no longer goes as far as Boulia or Bedourie and apparently a few of the old stops along the Birdsville Track are also no longer in the run.

Recently heard that the run is now up for tender again so will be interesting to see if it changes hands again.

Pffffttt! the West Side is the woosy area for white settler folk.
In my day if yer parked near the Northern Exchange hotel after dark it paid to check your wheels before starting in case of non reflective snoring chocks !

Nothing had changed when I frequented YPAG Tinpis, which is why I never went anywhere near that or any other den of iniquity!!

TK & CK would have had my 'aspidanglies' if I ever did!!

This here APACHE, actually went to the INDIAN in the gutta with Pinky. it was actually quite nice. Not too sure that it is "australia famous" or whatever the hell he said, but every time I walked in there, I counted the same number of dogs on the way in as on the way out... and it never changed!(thank goodness).

DF.... I was amused by your throwaway line ...
I believe Rossair does a twice weekly (Mon & Fri) run...
