Will Lake Eyre flood this year?

Does anyone know the possibility of Lake(s) Eyre flooding this year? Saw a few new articles saying there are ‘hopes’ of it happening.

I flew out there a few years ago and promised myself that the next time it floods I am definitely going back.

Cheers

Not very likely at this stage. If there is significant rain in the west Lake Eyre catchment and the Diamantina catchment, it may get a bit of fill. That is still not impossible at this stage. The 2000 event got the big rains in April/May with around 30" of rain in the Winton, Qld area.
Cooper would be lucky to fill all the 52 lakes in the Coongie system.

My parents have had 24" since the beginning of Nov 2007. They are on one of the creek systems leading into the Barcoo. Creeks have been running almost continuously since then. It would still take a fairly big rain event to make anything significant happen.

It has to be a reasonable chance this year.

When Jaba and I flew over it in Nov last year there was water flowing in to the northern end of the Lake.

It is still only the start of March so there is a good chance of a wet season in north Qld - on top of the feral monsoon that has occupied much of 2008 to date.

If it fills, Jaba and I are headed back for a look see.

I went for a swim in L. Eyre once. That was in the '80s. It wasn't completely full I don't think but was still a rarity. The lake was bloody huge from the air.

lake eyre

Did a short stint out of Maree in 2000ish?
Was lucky enough to see it bone dry then 60-70% full.
Spectacular stuff.
Has anyone google earthed the Maree man lately.?
Big conspiracy theory that sold a few tickets.
Bring on the rain.

lake eyre filling ?

yes, how long is a piece of string ? 185skywagon is correct in saying current floodwaters heading down the thompson/barcoo/cooper would be unlikely to make it to the lake.

the cooper ck only contributes approx 17% to the lake.

the diamantina / georgina rivers are the main contributors. watch the floodwater reports on the bom site.

www.bom.gov.au/hydro/flood/qld/west.shtml

basically if the georgina river / eyre ck floods at bedourie and the diamantina floods at birdsville..... water should reach the lake

otherwise, keep an eye on the wrightsair website for updates

From what I was told the other day by some friends of mine that had been up that way there is no water in those two at the moment. Their comment was (& these were people very familiar with the Lake Eyre area) that it is highly unlikely that any water will make it into the lake. Of course if you listen to the guy from Wrightsair, he will tell you just the opposite!
