The vagaries of the internet

http://www.historyofwar.org/articles/weapons_P-51H.html

The P-51H did not see active service. It first flew on 3 February 1945, and did not enter operational service until after the end of the war.

Both are awesome sounds but in my book the radial takes the cake. An R2800 or R3350, nothing like it.

Cheers

the Spitfire was perfect as a defender as used in the Battle of Britain
Apart from the lack of fuel injection - Spitfire pilots had to roll and pull through to chase the 109s which could perform negative 'G' dive entry to escape. Also lack of a cannon. The .303 was later shown to be a liability whereas the Mustang, P-47 and others showed that the .50 cal was king. Or a cannon. The radial is the sound for me. Even the DC-3 or the Green Gravel Truck sounds good with the radial engine.

The P-47/51 etc were developed later than the Spit and so of course introduced better armarment from the outset.

I love the sound of a Merlin, I don't know what the major differences are between the Packard merlin and the RR Merlin but the Temora Spits seem to have the edge in sound over any Mustang I have seen fly.

I would love to see this in reality. I love the sound of the supercharger:

I caught a quick glimpse of a Sea Fury a couple of years ago as it tore through the sky at about 1500 ft north of Sydney. I heard it before I saw it and made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. I would love to see it at an airshow but taxation law has since intervened:

Dart 510 engined Mustang

Does anyone know what happened to VH-UFO, Dart engined Mustang? (ex RAAF A68-187) last known whereabouts was in Canberra, June 1974.

Now that aeroplane would have had an interesting sound, you were talking Radials and Merlin engines, what about the Dart?

Apparently it was a very thirsty beast, and had a couple of 110 gal drop tanks

Rolls Royce Dart conversion of Commonwealth Mustang A68-187, converted at Bankstown Airport in Sydney. Later restored to Merlin power by Square One, this is now Frank Borman's "Su Su II", registered to Picacho Aviation LLC, Fairacres, New Mexico as N50FS

Whats a spitfire?

Although big fan of the spit, I was extremly lucky to hear the lanc, 4 rollers at oshkosh a few years back, what a machine - what a sound!

It's interesting these days in aviation, Just how little some cpl students (and pilots employed) know about older style aviation. Now I'm not saying that all prospective pilots should take a history lesson, but it is pretty sad that some of these up and coming pilots don't know what a spitfire is... but hey it's prob just me.

Spitfires are what all the old ex warries flew when I was a young fella
No one flew Lancs or Halifaxes or was a WOP/AG or camp guard or dixie basher.
Nope they ALL flew "The old Spitty yer know..."
I calculate there must have been at least 3 milllion of the bloody things constructed in War II or there was a lot of bull****ters around them days

Pffft ...

V-16 supercharged 1.5 litre 1953 BRM F1 car rips them all!
http://www.billzilla.org/BRM-fulltrack.mp3

I had a HELL of a time finding "Into The Red", but it was worth the time and effort! I've got you to blame for it too.
The BRM gives me spine tingles EVERY time I hear it.

Pffft,

Yep big fan of them. But it has to be a 1970s era - the last of the dominant Quadcam V8 monsters!

Total production of Spitfires and Seafires amounted to 22,789 and a breakdown of this figure into the various marks is given below.

In the 1970's Piper bought a number of Mustang airframes and fitted them with Lycoming T55 turboprops, for a contract with the USAF on close support combat aircraft. It must have been impressive as the USAF came back and took a look at it again in the 1980's.

Mustang, Spitfire, Trojan, Wirraway, Sea Fury, DC-3 all sound good.

Every Yank flew Mustangs in the last war, if not they were marines etc.

Plus 100 Me 262's, 50 tanks and 3 trains.

Not to mention 50 Mig 15's sorry wrong war!

Fortunately had an instructor who had flown P51's with the RAAF, plenty of time discussing flying them and he gave me a few questions to ask would be P51 pilots to see if they were genuine Mustang drivers or bull**** artists!!!

Sea Fury

In the Jan/Feb issue of Australian Pilot There is a story submitted by an ex-RAAF Mustang pilot who, while on cse in NW with the Navy, took a Sea Fury for a spin. It's a great read. He was obviously very impressed with the performance, even compared to a 'stang. I would love to get my hands on such a beast. The sound and power of those big radials is just increadible!

I would post a scanned copy but I am unsure about copyright.
