Alternate Required?

Hi Guys
i was going though the Bob Tait Instrument rating book (doing IREX)and i was doing this question. The problem is with the cloud.

Question 5 (pg3.24)
You are planning and IFR Charter Flight into Gladstone with an ETA of 0200.

TAF YGLA 011755Z 2008 05008KT 9999 SCT010 SCT 040 BKN 014
FM 03 RAIN BKN010 FEW040CB
T 14 22 25 26 Q 1007 1008 1007 1005

(Alternate minima at Gladstone (2016-4.4) there is AWIS( the Alt minima is shaded) so 100 feet can be taken off cloud base, so 1916. 2 x VOR equipped and VOR approach at the aerodrome,

My answer was that no alternate is required, the ETA is 1 hour before the change in the weather. But the answer says that i need an alternate because there is broken cloud below the Alt Minima.

Never seen cloud depicted like that, thought it was always in sequence.
For the sake of training though an Alt is req.

The boys are correct there 'awnick'. Don't panick too much it takes time to develope the required skills to decipher some TAF's. Unfortunetly they are not written in plain english. I guess if they where then a TAF could be as long as a short story! Usually the 30 min buffer @ side of a requirement catches people out, whether it be for the removal of an operational req (Eg. 30 mins holding due inter) or the adding of such.

Stick with it, it's when yr actually flying that yr skills will be needed the most, not so much on paper.

Wasn't the buffer. Just a poorly written TAF, meant to trick I believe.
The cloud heights are normally from the ground up as you read them. The example given is not a good one for that reason.
During any exam be wary of this style of trick. Negative learning in my opinion.

Awnick, just be careful about those 'FM's when you read them. They are not always doom and gloom, as they will also indicate the removal of an operational requirement. The 30 min each side mentioned by CW in an earlier post relates to a different matter ie inter/tempo.

What you need to watch is a couple of traps:

the ETA during the currency but up to 30 minutes prior to the forecast commencement;

the FM applying/removing an alternate requirement (hence 30min B4 or 30 min after the FM time).

and just to close the lid on the trap is planning to hold based on an inter or tempo when an alternate was required all along.

Good luck with the IREX

Am keen to learn all. Keep the good explanations up Tnxs
