Aviation High a new era in education

A new era in education is set to take off next year with the opening of Australia's first dedicated aviation high school at Hendra in Brisbane.
From the beginning of the new school year, Hendra Secondary College will become 'Aviation High', providing students with a direct pathway to careers in the aviation industry.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the school would support Queensland's growing aviation industry by providing high-quality and relevant education and training for students from Years 8 to 12.
'The State Government will invest $18 million over the next four years to establish Australia 's first dedicated aviation high school,' Mr Welford said.
'This is an historic step for education in this country and will ensure Queensland students are well-positioned to take up careers in this burgeoning industry.
'The aviation sector is a major player in Queensland, employing an estimated 14,000 people, with some 6000 jobs generated by industry expansion over the past five years.
'With Queensland on track to become the aviation hub of the South Pacific, we want to give our students every opportunity of working in this significant industry.
'The high school will work with Aviation Australia, universities, training providers and industry to provide students with direct pathways to careers in the aviation and aerospace industry in Queensland and beyond.'
Mr Welford said students at the school would continue to study a broad range of subjects but within an overarching aviation context.
'In Years 8 and 9 students will study the same or similar subjects studied at other high schools but with an aviation focus where appropriate,' he said.
'For example Technology students may learn about hi-tech developments in aircraft construction while in Studies of Society and the Environment they may look at the history of flight and its impact on society.
'Senior students will continue to study core subjects like English and mathematics but will also have the opportunity to pursue a range of elective aviation subjects.
'These subjects are designed to support a variety of aviation careers - everything from caterers and flight attendants to pilots, meteorologists, aviation lawyers and engineers.'
Mr Welford said consultation was underway with current students, their parents and the community about the transitioning of the high school.
'As part of this, my senior departmental officers have been meeting with students, staff and families affected by the change,' he said.
'We have made a commitment that existing Year 10 and 11 students will be able to complete their studies at the school with the full range of their selected subjects.
'While students are encouraged to stay at the school and be part of this exciting development, assistance and support will be provided for those who wish to move to a different school.'
Mr Welford said Hendra Secondary College was selected as the site for Aviation High because of its already strong links with the aviation industry and its proximity to the Brisbane Airport precinct.
'Hendra Secondary College is one of 10 Queensland schools involved in Education Queensland's innovative Aerospace Project,' he said.
'Aviation High will build on this successful initiative by providing Queensland students with an even greater opportunity to launch a career in the aviation industry.'

My old alma mater has come a long way since I attended what was then Hendra State High School in its second year of operation in the early sixties. One of my lasting memories is of being reprimanded by the Deputy Principal for having the temerity to look out the window to admire a DC-3 on finals for RW13. It was to be many years after I left before they built an assembly hall and now it's got a big 747 painted on it. Would have been regarded as graffiti in my day! My history teacher would have known how much I hated the subject. I couldn't even spell "historian" and now I are wun. Good luck to all the students of Aviation High. Fris turned out all right - I've been on an aviation high ever since I graduated.
