CPL Preparation

Hello Guys,
Recently started studying for my CPL exams, was going to self study them has anyone got any suggestions or hints. Some of the people that I have talked to said I should have no problem self studying most of them but a few are going to need class time.

Any input would be greatly appreciated, also if there are practise exams available to help with the exam style questions.

G Day Mate

I just finished the last of my CPL subjects at 39 years old.

Its been said numerous times on this website, however Bob Tait's books are very good. I have never been good at study and whilst I didn't blitz the subjects I did OK. It does require you to focus but on reflection I can't say it was hard. Get Bob's books and you will get through without any problems whatsoever.

I am just about to get into the ATPL subjects and quite looking forward to continuing my learning.

I think the most important thing is to have a mind set to enjoy the experience of learning something new.

Best of luck.....you won't need it.

Hey mate,

Although I did do all my CPL subjects in a classroom, I would honestly say you wouldn't have a problem self studying them at all.

The ones you were told would problem need classroom time would probably been performance and aerody. They'd probably be the hardest out of the lot, but still self studyable.

Give it 100% concentration and you'll be alright.

Adam.

Self study shouldnt be a problem at all.

All I can say is don't memorise questions and answers!!! Know a few people who had a habit of memorising some of Bob's questions and answers and were rather shocked when they went in to the CASA exam.

I'd get an easy one out of the way first so you get used to the format of the exams and then concentrate on some of the harder ones.

However some study progression could be helpful as some subjects lead in to others.

I.e

Aerodynamics > General Knowledge > Performance & Planning > Nav

Of course you could also throw in Met and Air Law in there

Most people struggle with Aerodynamics and Performance & Planning, and to some extent GK if your not mechanically minded.

Just make sure your also up to speed with the BAK and PPL level stuff, because you will find some BAK style questions in there.

Step 1 - Make sure you have access to the texts for the subject

Step 2 - Download the Day VFR syllabus (specifically the ground training part) from the CASA site.

Step 3 - Treat every syllabus point as an "explain" (or similar) question, but open book, so you can copy the answer out of the texts provided you understand it.

Step 4 - Write a paragraph or 2 answer to the syllabus question. This is important, as its easier to remember things if you write them down. If you don't understand what you're writing, try another text.

Thats basically all I did, never had to resit cpl or irex.
