NZ 'D' Cat Instructor Rating
G'day,
Can anyone please confirm that if you hold a current B or C cat and have the hour requirements, no flight test is required for D cat issue?
CAA website and discussion with chief pilot lead me to believe this is the case....

Yes, that is correct,
In Dec I had CAA do a logbook assessment, and issue a 'D ' Cat 'flight test report'
I am a current 'B' Cat, now have to do the 'fit and proper person' stuff, once this is done, then I present my report to CAA with the appropriate fee($50 or $55 from Memory) together with my licence, and the 'D' cat will be entered .
You must meet the 'D' cat issue requirements first.

Would you mind PM'ing me the person to deal with in the CAA regarding the logbook assessment to get the ball rolling? Or is it simply a matter of ringing pers licencing?

As I understand it you require an 'A' or 'B' Cat Instructor Rating to automatically convert it to a 'D' Cat. A 'C' Cat is not sufficient.
As the rating is a prime rating you are required to do a Fit and Proper Person Declaration with police clearances etc unless you have completed those since Feb 07 when only a declaration is required. After March 08 you may be required to pass an English Proficiency test as well. An Instructional Techniques course may also be a requirement if you haven't attended one before. The issue of the rating costs $50 and you can add type ratings to your licence for the same $50 if you only have logbook entries of those type ratings.
Contact the licencing section at CAA. I think Mike Tucker is the man to talk to. Also check out the CAA website Advisory Circulars AC61-18. The experience requirements are there.

Ok, thanks for all the info.
Seems strange they wouldn't consider a 'C' cat sufficient provided the hour requirements were met but stranger things have happened in the world of aviation!
I guess that means C cats get the priviledge of forking out another 500+ slides to 'Services (Very) Limited' to demonstrate instructing competence on top of the $1087 plus aircraft already paid to do the same thing in order to get the C cat.

I got mine based on my B Cat, I had the logbook assesment done by an ASL flight testing officer while he was at the organisation I worked for doing CPL flight tests. Could be an option for you.

Ahhhhh yeah. I fogot about the ASL guys in the field.....
I nearly had that done a few years ago, but the testing officer
escaped too quickly.(Plain Bikkies, no chokky ones)
ASL may charge an 'assessment' fee, I am fairly sure, then you still have to
take the paperwork to CAA anyway.(or mail it!)
I happened to be in Wellington harassing CAA on another matter, so I was well placed to obtain the 'D' Cat peices of paper from John Parker.

got mine from ASL testing officer too. About 15mins of pushing calculator buttons and talking horses and it was done. In the post to CAA and hey presto multi instructor for life. Gotta be worth some coin at some stage in the future!!

I think it was going to cost me $25 (circa 2003-04) for a logbook assessment for the issue of a D Cat plus the $50 license issue fee IF it was an individual exercise specifically for the issue of the D-Cat, but when I had my multi instructor limitation removed, it was included in the fee for that and hence he assessed the logbook for both Multi and D-Cat requirements.
