ALA's / strips / places to land on Fraser Island and around the area...

Hi all,

I'm interested in the available strips around Fraser Island and Rainbow Beach. Anyone been up there and knows what's available to light AC?

Cheers,
Flog.

3 strips I know of, the one at Orchid Beach and two in the middle of the Island.

I think you need to contact the resort for the one closest to Eurong Beach, the other one I have no idea, and Orchid Beach I think ask the Kiosk up there.

Have a look on Google Earth.

Orchid Beach - 560m of grass on a very soft sand base. Bowl shaped with 20ft high trees at each end. Little bit tricky, but no prob if you've got the right a/c, you're on top of your speed and you look after that nose wheel (if you've got one). Park by the old rusty sprinklers NOT anywhere near the tree or the concrete helipad you WILL get bogged - stay well clear of the south eastern end of the parking area.
And say hi to Judy in the shop - she'll look after ya. One of the nicest and most helpful aerodrome operators you'll ever come across (don't cross her, she runs the whole town!!). Orchid Beach has a great beach, shop, accom. Great spot and the pick of the bunch by a mile for me. Give the Orchid Beach trading post (Judy) a call for details.

Tobys Gap - about 3/4 of the way down just in from the eastern side. Not really close to anything, i've never landed there, but looks good from above. 800ish meters of gravel. I think Eurong runs this strip.

Toogoolawa - Just south of Kingfisher Bay. 1000m of beautiful, hardly used asphalt. Run by Kingfisher Bay and give them a call in advance they'll come pick you up if you're staying there. Park anywhere, nobody ever uses it

Don't forget to do a lap of the island at 500ft, awesome views. Have a look at Lake Mackenzie too. And keep an eye out for sharks in the shallow water around the northern tip.

Keep an eye out for Airvans operating off the beach between the Maheno Shipwreck and Eurong - they're on 126.7 (well they used to be) best to give them a call. Air Fraser, they'll know more about Toby's Gap too.

PM me if you want more details, used to fly to Orchid and Toogoolawa alot.

Disclaimer - all of my info is 10 months old, moved on since then.

Toogoolawah is the parachuting strip just north of the township (btw about 20nm NW of Wivenhoe Dam, nowhere near Fraser). You'll want to get permission to land there or Al may get a teensy bit upset.

If you're going into Orchid beach, there's a $15 landing fee, but do not take this strip lightly. If you are taking anything in around C172 size, do not have any more than one pax and light fuel. The surface is very draggy. Loose sand with a light grass covering. Use a short field technique and keep it moving from the backtrack from as far back as you can get.
Rainbow beach is a similar surface, but a lot flatter and longer. Much easier.

Fraser Island

There is a bitumun strip about 800m with a windsock on the western side of the island about halfway up it , I landed there some years ago in a partial aviator and I had to contact Eurong Beach Resort for permission to land and park, there was nothing there like phones, wc, fuel etc but we had arranged through Eurong to do transfers for us.

Oops, i stand corrected. Can't for the life of me think of the proper name of that strip. But it definitely is there.

As for Rainbow beach, there is a strip there that the Skydivers use. Give them a ring. Their number is on the AFAP site, they're currently advertising for drivers.

Rainbow is about 1000m long...I have been in and out of there a fair bit of late in a c182 with bigger tyres and with slightly deflated tyres and it only takes me about 400-500m to get off at MTOW...

Be careful on landing as the strip has many undulations in it and has some bare (just soft sand patches) along the strip and take wider turns as it’s easy to get bogged down....
