Outkast

As an ex-member of the Manawatu Districts Aero Club, I found your post to be particularly interesting.

I was not aware of that mid-air involving Massey Aviation College.

I was however aware of this one, having flown both of the aircraft involved.

Investigation 89-063

Piper PA38 ZK-EVA and Piper PA38 ZK-EQM, mid-air collision, 6 km east of Palmerston North, 31 July 1989

Some lessons are hard learned!

Unhappy

bad weekend that, 6 locals killed - the midair followed by the loss of the Convair off the end of Auckland runway by the PM based crew a few days later.

Have probaby had a dozen or more "near" misses. There will no doubt be more. Of course, it was always the other guys fault. It all depends on your level of tolerance as the doctor says. What I think is a far miss you might write up an incident report for!

Had a 'mid-air' in a Glider many years ago with a Wedge Tailed Eagle!

No damage to the glider, an Open Libelle VH-GUL but the poor Eagle came off second best.

And scared the bejaysus out of me!!

08-600 vs Duck

You should see what a duck does to the leading edge of a Cresco!! We rubbed up against one about 18 months ago spreading super. Smashed the skin right back to the spar and cracked the webbing on the spar. Thems is some solid-arsed birds!!!
Nearly rubbed props with some bright spark in a 210 while I was on short finals when he forgot to turn on his radio or look out the window...I imagine that would have left an even bigger dent just quietly...

Visual on the Fishfinder

One of the most useless transmissions for an ATCO...
ATCO - "ABC, report sighting a xxxxx in your 12 0'clock, 4 miles, same altitude"
ABC - "Yep we've got him visual on TCAS"

Come on guys & gals...at least look out the window!!

On my PPL test flight whilst under the hood returning to YCE? the examiner grabed the controls and put us into a very abrupt steep climbing left turn then said take your hood off and fly home with no more said . When i landed he got out ,thru the office straight into his car . The receptionist asked me what had happened because the guy was as white as a ghost .The next day he told me i passed and that we missed an arrow by feet, when we spoke to the other guy he didnt even know .

Was about to blatt on about my near "hit" but Outkast has posted a link explaining what has since happened to this aircraft...

Need not say anymore.

(Actually, I will - here's a link to report - makes very interesting reading I think)

Fatal PA28 Midair

(And FTDK, I didn't know about the one in 1989 - am off to read report now...)

KiwiChick - You were probably just an egg when that unfortunate event occurred.

Clearance into YSSY given at 9000 in Rockwell Commander, Chieftain outbound from YSSY given 9000. Just north of reporting point Craven and in broken cloud, we passed. Luckily for all concerned my aircraft was on an IFR training flight and flown to tolerance. We saw the faces in the Chieftains windows as it flicked past and felt the vibration from its props...........not a word was mentioned when both aircraft enquired to ATC as to why we were both at the same level on reciprocal track. On the ground at YSSY briefing office to lodge a then 225 and nobody wanted to say anything. Had we have hit..........pilot error.
