Brisbane Airspace Question
Hey guys, quick question regarding some of the airspace around Brisbane. I'd like to do some flying over the Redlands area, most of which has Class C LL 1000 over the top. Whats the procedure if I just want to fly in, do some orbits for 10 minutes or so then leave? Do I need a flight plan, or will a quick radio call suffice?
Cheers.
Cheers.

If you stay below 1000' and outside the adjoining BN CTR then as far as I can see you can fly around till your heart's content.
If you want to go above 1000' give BN Radar a call on 125.7 and they should be able to sort you out. Just tell'em where you are and what you want to do.
If you are not familiar with the area you might take a GPS to ensure you stay clear of BN CTR. I suspect they will get a bit excited if you penetrate without a clearance.
If you need a clearance, having a flightplan in may get it faster, but I would not have thought a flightplan was essential.

Just bear in mind that while the Redlands is close to sea level it is still above it which will put you at less than 1000' above a built up area. My advice is to not create a nuisance. i.e. noise, scary flying. Probably avoid the Alexandra Hills area too if you know what I mean

Alexandra Hills hey? I'll keep that in mind I was planning on about 1500 - 2000ft, so I obviously need a clearance for the Class C. Do I just request "orbits for 10 minutes in ....... area at 2000ft" from BNE Radar?

Yeah mate that's what I would do.
If you want to make it a little easier, give'm a ring and explain what you would like to do. They will usually try to accomodate you, unless it make life really difficult for them - like having you orbiting in the middle of an arrival or departure path.
It is likely that they will give you a "Clear to operate within 5 nm of [insert prominant landmark], not above 2000 (or the such like).

OZZIE,
I have done a bit of flying in and around the Brissy zone and would recommend you try the following:
1. Submit a flight notification with as much detail as possible.
2. After submitting the notification, call BN ATC and give them an outline of your proposed ops. They appreciate it.
3. Get a code on the ground at AF e.g. " BN radar, Alpha Bravo Charlie, taxying Archerfield for Archerfield, request code".
4. Do your normal departure East out of the Archer zone and report your position in relation to Mt Cotton when you request your airways from radar
5. Once 'identified' Radar will normally pass you to BN approach for your airways clearance
6. Once your done just report 'ops complete' and request clearance to 'exit the zone' tracking to Mt Cotton
You can normally get the BN ATIS while taxying at AF on 125.5.
Hope this helps.

Just out of curiosity, why do you say that? Light planes all over the sky all the time, no one else seems to avoid it. Keeps me looking up and dreaming
