Ever wondered why lame's wear bar with a purple strip between them.

The king then decreed that all engineers shall wear gold stripes in memory of the Titanics engineers and the purple stripe denotes that it was a decree of the King.
Sorry OzG3 but that's an urban legend. The real story goes something like this:

Engineers` Purple
The gold braid insignia of rank worn by British mercantile marine engineer officers on the sleeves of their uniform jackets has a purple background. There is a long held belief that this was decreed by King George V in recognition of the heroism shown by Titanic`s engineers. Although it is a fine story and that heroism certainly deserved recognition, it is incorrect. In 1865 it was decided that British naval engineers would wear a purple background to their gold braid of rank in order to distinguish them from other officers and that colour coding transferred to the British mercantile engineer officers when they started wearing uniforms. Although engineer officers aboard passenger ships wore uniforms the practice was not common aboard cargo ships prior to WWI and so purple was not usually seen. As more engineer officers wore uniforms the purple background became common and the myth associated with the Titanic developed.
It's also a Navy tradition that other officer musterings have different colours as well. I recall that red is medical and we've already established that purple was engineering but I have a vague recollection that there was at least one other colour as well.

local Uni flying school students in the bar. Of course, they were in uniform and wearing gold wings and their braid on the shoulder.
At the Club Dero in Port Moresby wearing epaulettes and wings into the bar was an absolute no no!!! Doing so incurred the penalty of 'shouting the bar!'

Never ever heard anyone caught in the time I was there.

In the kimberley, drinking with epaulettes on is a six-pack fineable offence.

Your fellow pah-lots would attempt to trap you by offering you a beer as you walked back from your slug/scarecan after the last bungles of the day.

Friendly chat as you open the beer, but as it reaches your lips BAM six pack fine on the board for you.

Kept the beer fridge full however, along with many other cartonable offences

and only a moron would be caught wearing full pilots uniform in town in kununurra unless you had to pick up pax or drop them off.

...disco

How many times you've worn your uniform to Cargo Bar to try and pick up.

The only people who make a big deal about pilots wearing epaulettes/uniform outsidwe work is.......other pilots. The general public wouldnt give a rats ass. How many times do you see taxi drivers/bus drivers etc at a pub/cafe/supermarket after work in uniform...heaps. I certainly dont look at them and assume they are all tossers for wearing their uniform while outside the boundaries of their workplace.....really....who gives a sh*t

Drunken pilots.?

The public should never see a pilot drinking alcohol in uniform and particularly not overindulging. Only the military have a licence to do that.

I was just thinking about that myself yesterday Bushy, in fact it is almost a 'rite of passage' in the military!

Thoughts

HH
Yes, that seems to be a part of the military philosophy, which has no place in civil aviation.
A dutch sea captain summed it up nicely. He said "for thoughts there is always gin."
