APEC Conference - Sydney Basin Restricted Airspace

Hi, has anyone noticed this new AIP Supplement regarding the total conversion of the Sydney basin out to 45 DME, from the Surface up to FL280, as a restricted airspace zone during the APEC conference in September?

See http://www.airservicesaustralia.com/...sup/s7-h23.pdf

It appears that no one from Bankstown, Camden, Hoxton Park etc, will be able to fly without an approval number and a lodged flight plan.

Same kind of arrangements as the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne it looks like. Worked OK for all concerned IIRC.

Cheers,

NFR.

It not only applies to the airports you mentioned but Wollongong , Katoomba, Warnervale anyone within 45 DME Sydney.
I have already applied for my number and now I have to attend a briefing @ Bankstown Sports Club firstly to see if I get a number and secondly if I can depart when I wish. Another CLUSTER F**K, if they held it in Canberra no one would be bothered and dont tell me CB wouldn't be easier to control than the Sydney Basin.
You have to lodge a flight plan for EVERY flight more than 24 hours before the event, that's going to work well at Bankstown for anyone wishing to do circuits NOT.
Just think every session of circuits needs a number and a Flight plan. WTF.

some of the circuits I see at bankstown everyday would almost require a flightplan regardless of any APEC meeting

CPL

Hehe, so true about some of those circuits.

At this stage i'm to have a CPL flight test during the meeting... Will my flying organisation have already obtained an approval number?

I'm thinking about whether it'd be worth bringing it forward to just before the meeting.

The clear intention of this is to shut down all recreational flying, flight training and non-scheduled air operations within a 6360 square nautical mile area centred on YSSY.

The requirenments for operations within the zone for the duration are so onerous that most ultralight, microlight and GA schools will be effectively grounded for the entire period...and I haven't seen any mention of compensation for loss of earnings mentioned anywhere, probably because there won't be any.

I only hope this restricted zone doesn't become a permanent fixture. It must be so tempting for the nameless, faceless bureaucrats who dreamed this up to just leave is in place after 10 September.

Basically, this means the terrorists are winning. They have caused a huge inconvenience to light aviation in and around the Sydney Basin for the event, without having to detonate so much as a single bomb, or even light a single fuse. All they have to do is exist, and this is the result. Yes, folks, the terrorists are most assuredly winning.

ADF have indicated that for flying training, they will accept "block planning" - just talk to them. If anyone wants the details for ADF contact, PM me

Thumbs down

Now you're getting the message about what GA has had to suffer in the US of A.

Of course, there's one person coming who's the prime reason for all of this.

Accordingly, if you fly in the US, you have to check where the latest rash of these things have cropped up lest you violate one on a happy VFR noradio flight!

G'day

The APEC will only be for 3 days but the US president and the Chinese PM will be here 2 days before that so expect this disruption to be around 5 days or more.

So how are international and domestic flights be handled ? Haven't received anything from CASA yet regarding this.

I suppose they will not tell us how they will handle a hijacked flight within the 45DME from YSSY. I wouldn't be surprised if we will have F18s patrolling the SY skies during that time 24/7 ready to blow up any airliner who squawks 7500.

Yep, just another knee-jerk reaction from the tools in "power". Its amusing how they flatter themselves thinking that people would want to blow them up. The terrorists are probably sitting on a tropical island, drinking cocktails and laughing at what a terrible hype the world has conjured itself into.

Woomera

If they want to selfishly close airspace for their own selfish use, tell them to have their meeting at Woomera.

Woomera...or at least Hamilton Island or someplace like that. It makes a lot more sense from a security point of view, too, never mind disabling a major city.

Gimme a break chaps.

It's like the old insurance and safety thing, if you think it is expensive/onerous try having an accident.

Australia holds a unique position of respect and admiration in the world and punches waaaaay above its weight in all manner of significant forums. Which ergo makes us a prime target for the bad guys or just plain maddies.

Anybody who thinks this is just another anti-GA thing and an excuse to keep it permanent and not about protecting our international guests, just doesn't get it and probably needs counselling anyway.

We have been warned repeatedly that our ultra tolerant and responsible attitudes to all comers is intolerable and unacceptable
