Thank You YMMB Tower
In an unmitigated display of shear stupidity yesterday, I managed to get "lost" on the taxiways of YMMB thinking there was a link at the end of 35R that would take me to 31L and 31R (the active runways). I therefore refused the offer of assistance from the Tower when they courteously asked me if I required directions after they saw me heading in the wrong direction.
They politely gave me taxi directions anyway when it became obvious I was stumped. I compounded my embarrassment on return an hour or so later with a right of way fracas with a C172 after crossing 17R (at least without causing an incursion for once).
Thank you to the long suffering Tower staff who have to put up with muppets like me and yet never seem to lose their temper. Where do they breed these superhuman beings, or do they just feed them Valium?

Funny you should mention that.
On Monday I heard the tower give a clearance for takeoff to a Chieftain, then was heard to say, "cancel that takeoff clearance, some d*ickhead is on the runway"
I was moderately amsued.
There were 8 hot air balloons flying on Mon monning and all had just landed at Moorabbin and the crew were walking everywhere.

Looks like kids in pre-school with black crayons designed that place.
The boys in the tower must be a sharp lot, at their elevation they do not have the same perspective as seen in that shot.
Almost a good excuse for ground radar!

Did my first 30 odd hours there back in '88 with the Royal Vic, seem to remember the place was always very busy and the circuit had about 12 bug smashers in at at peak, the SMC was usually very gentle and professional with us newbies, congrats to anybody that has that much patience!

Haven't been there for 20+ years, but they were very courteous and helpful when I used to frequent the place!
They do a Bloody good job under some very trying circumstances!
PS: Good thread too by the way!

I did roughly 60 hrs there at YMMB,its daunting at first rwy's every where, but you get use to it. Its very weird when two aircraft land together on seperate Rwy's you'd be hoping for no x wind wouldn't you, LOL.
The ATC are fantastic and always helpful, under all sorts of pressure with aircraft in the circuit up to 6-8 at once along with aircraft in bound and departures, its crazy there sometimes, your always gauranteed a go around when its flat out there.

I seem to recall being 3 abreast (at least momentarily) on the 10 Rwys at YBAF in the 70's. I was in a PA32 landing onto 10L, with a C150 doing a touch and go on 10C, and Baron that was climbing up my arse for a landing on 10L being put onto 10R, which was normally used for TO.

Are you messing with my head Doc, only L&R there now. Of course once upon a time there were 360 runways at YBAF.
Was there another strip thats been built over where the tower now is?
