757 Mayday Video
Not sure if this has been posted before, but came across this video on YouTube.
Got the heart racing just a little!
That's why they get paid the big bucks (well they should be!!)

Outstanding professionalism displayed by flight crew, tower and ground support units.
The Brits sure know how to handle this sort of thing with aplomb!

Guy in the left hand seat is a Brit, and has less than 500hrs multi PIC (so he couldn't even get a job driving a dash 8 in Oz )
The F/O is from the Czech republic
Very very well done......interestingly the RB-211 on inspection was completely undamaged, it does has however been removed for a hot section inspection due to EGT exceedances.

I know they are made to take a chook but that has gotta damage something!
He was calm and collected if not brisk in his radio work, and knew what he wanted to do, was very in control.
Great video work. What are the chances of catching that bird on tape like that!
J
PS......Wonder how the chook felt

J430, go and have a look in the rumours part of PPrune, a guy there Mr Spotty M, works for the engineering part of the airline I work for (monarch), they maintain some of the thomsonfly fleet RB211's, and as he is informed, it is ostensibly undamaged
The videographer is a guy called Simon who is a regular at manchester airport, and who has done some fantastic videos, most of which are posted on (mods I'm not advertising) flightlevel350.
I've spoken via email with simon a number of times about 757/767 stuff, and I have to say he is a real enthusiast.
The guys upfront did a fantastic job, and showed how professional aviators operate when the chips are down

Your mate could have 4000hrs PIC of his B757 and NO HSC, and not fly a Dash 8 in Oz!
Evertonian
Perhaps some board members should be made to watch this...
What an excellent piece of footage. Just class all round really...well done.

D-U-S if that engine failure happened in a Chieftain - at that point - you'd need more than 500hrs to extricate yourself out of that.
And then some.
Something like the hand of God come s to mind.

Looking at the video the engine didn’t actually fail. The vibes were probably through the roof and the fire alarm was going off but it would have been producing close to take-off thrust until the crew shut it down above about 400ft or what ever their procedures state.

Hat's off. Good job that man (men...women...whatever). It's just SO easy to sit on the fence and rate the efforts of fellow aviators. Wonderful that it was captured on film. We can all learn from the failures of others but, for mine, this is the one of those rare moments in aviation that we have the opportunity to live an emergency with those dealing with it. I can't fault it. It's all been done in the sim before but when the **** hits the fan we are all thankful for the training. And this crew proved that........

I’m not B757 rated but I would has it a guess the B757 can’t or didn’t on this occasion dump fuel and had to land substantially over max landing weight with only one thrust reverser available to take some of the heat out of the brakes.

Cadet?
Looks like the Captain may have been one of those low time pilots who got a fair bit of RH seat time and then moved over to the left.
Is it true that the engine ingested at least one bird, and dropped debri on the runway yet was "undamaged", but was replaced anyway.
Did these reports come from the company PR department?

Re brake issue, because he has no reverse on Rt Eng he would need more brakes to stop and there fore more energy= HEAT to Stop. So visual to check for heat/fire.
Silly Old Git
He wouldnt be using reverse
But that shouldnt in any way mean that braking was at all unusual
Dont know the 757 MLW there would be no reason really to land it overweight
Im just curious as I cant recall ever having to do that in a sim session
Also scary having firies walking around with an engine running
Did you notice the firies peering in what they considered was the damaged one?

land substantially over max landing weight with only one thrust reverser
Also at a reduced flap setting so it all adds up to a pretty high Vref and associated concerns Re the brakes.
All very impressive, though I felt like I might have told ATC to shut up a few times. Trying to be helpful can sometimes involve canning it and letting the guys get on with it.
