Instrument Ratings
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could give us a ball park figure on what an instrument rating will set me back and what is involved? Also can anyone recomend somewhere reputable on the South Coast of NSW to do it.
As an out of work Ag. pilot (due to the drought and all) maybe it is time to further my qualifications.

Its not on the south coast of NSW, but Johnsons Aviation at Port Macquarie is well known for good IR training. Few mates did it there recently and were very happy with it

try and so it in a type that could help you getting a job i.e a commonly used charter type e.g Not a dutchess as once your finished that will probably be the last time you see one. something like a senica or partenavia, bit more expensive however

IMO I would be more concerned about getting quality training from a reputable school rather than types used.
I'm not sure if time on non trainer types is as important as it used to be in the present (employment) climate. You can always get an endorsement on other types later if you think it will make you more employable. From my experience employers will place more importance on the right person than how many endorsement stickers you have.
What is involved? I'm a bit out of touch but I will have a go...

- pass the IREX exam
- about 40hrs of IF time
- 20 (???) of which can be done in a synthetic trainer.
- training usually commences in the SFT on basic IF, advancing into holding then approach procedures of various types.
- When you have the Sim down pat, then similar stuff in the aircraft until you meet the required standard. Have a look at CAO 40.2.1.
- You will also need an initial multi endorsement if you dont already have one.

I never got my pilots license with the intention of not being able to see where I was going, but I guess times maybe changing.

I knew an Ag pilot who had 12,000 hrs in the weeds before deciding to climb above 50' and get his MECIR. Took him quite a while to learn the radio calls and procedures, but he got there in the end.
The last I heard of him he was Chief Pilot of a GA operation.
