What was that????????

What was thaaaaaaatttttttt?????

At 4.45 pm Sunday, a small jet aircraft passed over Roma at low level and headed off to the north east. Tail on, it was reminiscent of an ME262 however the "engines" were probably fuel or weapon pods?

Any idea what it may have been???????

Don't worry, I see things all the time!

Thanks Below. It was too far away to see clearly but it did sound a bit quiet for a jet! It appeared to track to the north east - did it return and land at Roma?

Yes olderairhead. I'm sure we're both familiar with that problem!

Torres.... It returned a few minutes later and landed for fuel, before departing towards Emerald. I'm led to believe that a 2nd one came through about an hour after the first.

Now that looks suspiciously like WATER on the ground at ROMA - TINPIS & Ops Normal, where are you?? See, it DO rain in Roma - just not very much and not very often!

Judging by the foreshortening of the perspectives from the apron across the 36/18 RWY to the slope to the west, that must be one HELL of a telephoto lens!

Jamair. Yup - water. It rained!!! But we're still in drought. Some parts of the Maranoa have had less than 5 inches this year. And as any good woman will tell you, five inches of anything isn't very much!!!

nasa. You've been very quiet lately! At 4.45 pm on a hot Sunday afternoon, with or without glasses, my vision will probably be blurred - espacially when relaxing in the spa and enjoying the odd six pack or two! All I noticed was that the aircraft looked nothing like what you sell - it was low wing, fast and quiet!!!

Thumbs up

Torres. A quick squiz around the BOM radar units had Roma in the path of anothery this afternoon. Half yer luck, I wish it would hurry up and rain here..... 'Tis getting a bit warmish....

Jamair, yeah OK.... Below5K has been known to fiddle with the odd "toy".... G'day mate... just got yer chrissie card (and some blue bag) hand delivered!

Torres, ironically it was in one of nasa's "little" machines I was in Roma not all that long ago.... I stayed the night and should have said "G'day" (and thanks for that advice earlier this year). ....

hey Torres, is there ever a time when you're NOT in the spa with a cold sixpack??

I got a 10-person spa in my new digs (same neighbourhood as Ops); you're welcome to come along as long as you promise to bring beer and NOT disrobe

Sorry I'm late lads. Been otherwised engaged ..... er ...... in the spa with Cookie and a very fine 2000 Merlot ..... with XXXX Gold chasers, of course!!!

The feastive season seems as good an excuse as any I can think of for a PPRuNe Mini Bash in Roma - especially as I may not be able to make the Brisbash this year.

Date? Time?

Ops. It looked like rain late this afternoon but I don't think anyone got anything out of it. Tracked to the south as usual.

OK, I'll bite

What is it then? Was hoping someone else would ask to save the embarassment.

Immediate thoughts were PC-9 but it aint RED (RAAF). Or is it PC-21? Haven't heard of any of them on this rock yet.

PC-9/A. Looks like this FAC aircraft to me.

There are also four modified PC-9/A(F) aircraft in grey paintwork fitted with smoke grenade dispensers for target marking. These aircraft are based at RAAF Base Williamtown, near Newcastle, and are used to train ADF Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs, formerly forward air controllers), who coordinate air support to troops on the ground.

I think Below5000 answered that question earlier with a photo of the culprit itself. Looks like a FAC PC9 I think out of Williamtown probably headed to Rockhampton for excersises.
