You'll enjoy it
The President of Airline Flying Club lives in Nelson and has his own airstrip with two aircraft. He raves about Nelson and how it is the nicest place in NZ. I can't agree with him on the truck issue, but you'll see what I mean.
I wish you all the best, and I know that you'll enjoy the Sunny South Island.
ECT?

I was also looking at going to Nelson but mainly just to get my CPL subjects, then I was going to look around for a place to train to CPL. Is this a silly idea, will it end up more expensive? I was told Wakatipu Aero Club was a ood place to learn and Christchurch flying school. I would like to move to the south Island though.
Any advice?

Sounds good
Cheers ECT! i am very much looking foward to it, zkdan - they reckon you can stay on campus , but i do not wish to - do many people live try get a flat in the mot, or do most like you said get something in nelson and car pool..ju7ez - i was also just looking to do subjects, as i work in ops for a large GA company, a lot of logable sectors come up and i thought i could get my hours this way, have been around for a while now and listened to many people that have been through this position, and almost everybody has recomended that if you wish to do this as a career, the best option would be to not worry about the money up front and just do it pretty much, even if you need a student loan. Get that CPL and get that first job.

Why Nelson?
Why move to Nelson if you currently live in Wellington?
Kapiti Aero Club have a professional training arm.
They currently have 7 (seven) x c152 including 1 aerobat, 2 c172 - 1 IFR, c182RG - IFR and have just obtained a P68 for MEIR. Also other stuff like AA5, PA28, PA18. They also do Helos with H269.
They do the ground courses thru Whiteria Polytech.
There is a passing chance of getting an instructors job with them afterwards, they seem to go through the usual number of part-timers who often becoem full-time.
Hope this helps.

Kapiti or KFC??
Hi there jETA-1,
In my opinion you would be better off in Nelson or any traininng establishment in the country than Kapiti Air Academy. In fact I would go as far to say that it would be more beneficial for your career to work at KFC than Kapiti. Serving up an Extreme Burger Meal has gotta be better than being served up an extreme load of , because that is what you will get through Kapiti these days. I have been told by many that it was once a great place.
I know a few guys who studied in Nelson and speak of the place with good words. As for Kapiti here are the words of recent student's.............
Good Luck

Kapiti Aero Club have a professional training arm.
In all other senses, the word 'professional" and the name 'Kapiti Aero Club" should never be included in the same sentence!
And as far as "a passing chance of getting an instructors job with them afterwards" is concerned, only if you pay them for the privilege.
And finally, don't even think about doing your MEIR in a P68. It may be nice and simple, but it doesn't prepare you for the world of CSUs, retractable gear, and all the other stuff real twins have. The P68 is the Skoda of the aviation world... do your MEIR in a real aircraft.

I think the main thing to remember is to always Getchaout and go where all GA ops staff in Wellington go....
Be sure to grab all the time in those big powerfull csu's that you can, especially that sexy Airvan. just thinking about that swift sleek machine holding at Island Bay gets me all hot and bothered...
From my time in Mot i learnt that as a matter of pride u must get at least 90% in all exams as well, and if you stay onsite at the airport, be sure not to anger your roommate if you don't want to be beaten around the head with a baseball bat.
Enjoy your time with the nelson beach bunnys bro!
See you in the delta next year bang bang

Hey!
Hey there, if you are considering moving down to Nelson to fly/study mayby you should give me a txt or call as I have, (How to put it), had the "privilege" of flying with both organisations (Kapiti Academy and Nelson Aviation College), so I can give you the pro's and con's on both sides, although there aint many cons, if any, for the NAC! Email me your cell and can either txt or call, my email is [email protected]
Cheers and all the best.

If you want value for money go to chch Flying school, also a great, laid back crowd, good variety of aeroplanes too, and uncontrolled airspace.
PM me if you want to know more.

Bit off topic, but can any of you guys recommend a good flight school in the Wellington/Wanganui area. I am going to be over from the UK in the New Year visiting family, and was hoping to get in a few lessons( 3 or 4 max) with a view to possibly doing my PPL next year.
I have seen the website for the Manawatu Aero Club in N Palmerston, does anyone have any experience with this club?
Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

Better off in Paraparaumu - two operators to choose from, lots of different aircraft, and some friendly people about. Hawera has friendly people too! And Mt Taranaki... and close to Ruapehu...

if you don't mind 4 hour cross country flights in 152s, and being part of a sausage factory, they're great.
was in tauranga yesterday - usually nice weather, always windy, but yesterday the mount was shrouded in cloud at about 400ft all day.
their boss can fly though. i'll give him that.

Thanks for the recommendations guys, i will look into those.
Has anyone had any experience/heard good things regarding the Wanganui Aero Club.
This is where I am actually going to be staying so might be the most suitable choice if they are recommended.
