Red Bull Air Race, Perth, 2006
Ladies and Gents,
I must say, I am mightly surprised that no one yet has thought to start a thread on one of the greatest public air events ever to come to Australia.
I may be a little over enthusiastic, but to be honest I have been eagerly awaiting its arrival since I first heard it was coming to Australia.
To give this thread some purpose:
Individuals whom have been fortunate enough to see the race take place overseas please place you photos here.
Anyone who wishes to find out where to get the best accom, or struggling to book a place you could try your luck here.
Pre and post match hype; which pilot do you think will come out on top at the end of the day??? and why??
Any other ideas or comments, concerns or queries relevant to the red bull air race, post em on this thread.
Hope to see you all there and I look forward to your responses;
WTSPT

We got as close as 20 miles away. Traffic was horrendous, the weather worse. We gave up and went to a local pub. Typical English weather.
Saw them practicing in Templehof, Germany.

Winner will more than likely be flying an Edge 540 aircraft. They have the 'edge' over the Extra 300's, but for a public event the possibility of introducing a handicap seems a bit tricky.
A great race to witness - comparatively safe compared to other aviation racing events in the past. And the Aussie Red Bull girls have to be seen to be believed.
Britain's Paul Bonhomme is really advancing in this game.

QUOTE=The Cassidy Kid;2891604]So a couple of 4 or 5 of us are thinking of coming over for it from kiwiland, where's a good place to go looking for somewhere to stay for 4 or 5 nights?[/QUOTE]
There's a Peoples Palace that caters for Kiwis (just joking).
There are plenty of rooms available in Perth at the moment, and I booked the Sheraton through expedia.com. The more upmarket places sometime make you book direct with high rates and minimum stay requirements.
For independent review of hotels and other lodging (world wide) try tripadvisor.com

There are quite a few nice hotels in the city.
Hyatt Regency, Sheraton, Duxton and Parmelia Hilton are all located on the Adelaide Terrace/St Georges Terrace area. If you get a good room you will be able to watch the whole air race out your window. If not they are located within short walking distance of Langley Park (next to the river) which is where I'm led to believe they will using as an airstrip.
Out of the CBD, Burswood casino is a great place to stay and a short taxi ride into the city. The Radison on Scarborough beach is also quite good, but about 20 minutes out of the city.
I hope this helps !

TransPerth runs the buses and trains .. the city has a free 'clipper' bus service around the CBD during daylight hours .. but the car rules here, particularly if you need to get around and do some sightseeing as well .. hire cars are plentiful and reasonably priced .. look for discount deals ..

For anything else about Perth (eg restaurants etc) try http://www.perth.citysearch.com.au.
If you don't have a view from your accomm, best bet is to head to King's park or the South Perth foreshore where they will have the viewing screens set up. (Luckily I know people who live right there so solves that problem for me ) Apparently there will be an 'air festival' for the two days prior involving static displays and chats to pilots etc, Langley Park is the place where the aircraft will be.
Really looking forward to this, should be a fab day out!! Will be held in Perth for 07 & 08 as well!!
(As for original poster - had considered posting this but thought it would get the big 'CLICK' seeing how things are in D&G lately!!

Just to clarify for everyone. The Race Course can be seen from both the North and South Perth Foreshore. If you have trouble finding accomidation in the city, maybe somewhere southside might be the option. There will be 6 barge's set up along the river, 3 either side, with 20 foot high screens on them, so either side will provide you with a good view of the race. Practice session will be on Thursday the 16th, Qualifying on the 17th and 18th, and the main race will be on Sunday the 19th. Monday the 20th is kept on standby if the 19th is rained out. There will be a 'festival of aviation' starting about 9:00am through till 11:30am prior to the big race. The content of the festival is still being decided, however Roulettes are confirmed as well as some other RAAF 'heavy metal', and numerous other warbirds and vintage aircraft.
Now, as for the location of the after party. That's a secret.

The only good thing about Perth is that the air race is on there. Hey Red Bull bring it to the Gold Coast, our beaches are better

Lovin' it
Now that's exactly what this thread is here for. Love your genius OWEN;
Our group is in the process of designing our own shirts; which will individualise us from the rest of the crowd. Watering hole what a fantastic idea; not to sure where yet though; will place another post when a suitable venue has been scouted out. Any other perth locals; willing to put forward suitable venue suggestions for end of day drinks; come forth and give us some ideas.
I dont know how many of you have heard already, but there is this vicious rumor running around of a cancel in event due to an expected low number of spectators on the day, this is in my opnion a load of bullocks; maybe a show of hands as to the ppruners who are visiting might give some sort of perspective as to the validity of this report.
I'll be there =
Not me, not interested =
Wish I could, but have work commitments =

Owen - Anyone caught wearing a Sydney Swans hat, in Perth, is regarded as a total loser, after the AFL Grand Final ..
Best viewpoint for the races is the East, SE and S sides of the escarpment in Kings Park. Plenty of walk trails around the escarpment, that will give an excellent elevated view of the action (approx 500' - 800' above river level).
There is virtually no pubs in the CBD .. except for Rigby's Bar and Bistro, at rear of 221 St Georges Tce, in the West End of the CBD.
Rigbys caters pretty much to the city workers, and is only open from 12 midday to late, Mon to Fri.
Friday nite, the 17th Nov, Rigbys would be about the closest boozer, and a reasonably good place as well.
My choice, would be the Vic .. over the back of Kings Park, heading down Hay St to Subiaco.
Nice pub .. however, it can get packed Friday and Sat nights.
Another good choice would be the Windsor, on Labouchere Rd, in Sth Perth. Big old pub, with a big bar and eatery with excellent food. The pub, and the area, is getting a little pricey, though.
Back in the City, if you don't go to, or don't like, Rigbys .. Northbridge is the drinking/eating side of town, that lights up after 6:00PM. The Brass Monkey is a good pub, on the cnr of William and James St.
Other directions to head, are down into Subiaco itself (couple of good pubs/plenty of eateries) .. or out along Albany Hwy into Victoria Park. A number of pubs/bars out that way, plus plenty of eateries. There's always the Casino, too, just over the Causeway.
Here's a venue guide for the city ..
http://www.theguide.com.au/events.ph...2006&t=2&cal=1 ..
There's numerous venue menus .. you can search by venue types, region and suburb .. move the dates (months) .. and clicking on the venue gives a drop-down menu that gives venue details, address, and pics ..

RFDS possible charity program
OS I can do that for you, I will print off a few spares and can give it to you at the future venue. PM me and I'll give you an idea of the cost, and what will actually be printed on the shirt.
To all out there: I was thinking; that this is the perfect opportunity to print of a heap of shirts and try to raise a little money for a worthy charity; RFDS I would suggest be the most suitable candidate. I was hoping to print off a few hundered shirts for red bull air race and try it out myself, but unfortunately I'm not in the position to be able to carry the cost of the initial print (Im sorry but problem of pilot wages is my main hurdle). And in addition to that, Im not to sure if any permission is required to actually run a fund raising program for something like this.
Any good samaritans out there willing to do something like this on the day; I am sure many ppruners would probably put in for a shirt (myself included) that they could wear at the races. I would also be more than happy to help out in any way possible.

WTSPT - Quite a good idea, and an excellent charity. My personal gut feeling is that a charity collection licence wouldn't be needed for a fundraiser of that size .. however, an email to DOCEP (link is in the following advisory site), would be a good move, just to ensure you don't get your arse burnt. Sorry, I am not in a sufficiently rosy financial position to assist, either, but I do hope you find a benefactor.
