Casual Rates.
Does anybody know what the casual rate for a Gr.2 instructor is. I have done a search and can't find anything on it. I should have my Gr.2 in 10 days time and would like to know what I can earn.
Whispering "T" Jet
Section 13.2.1 of the GA Pilots Award 1998.
A casual pilot will be paid per flying hour at the rate of 1/800 of the annual salary prescribed for the class of work performed (including additions to salary).

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately I cannot access the award. I have tried downloading it but all that it does is take me to the AFAP website.
I would like to know approx. what the hourly rate is for instructing on a Warrior or C172.

The Australian Association of Flight Instructors says that the rate for a casual Flight Instructor Grade 2 is (SE) $50.74 PH. NVFR SE $52.40.
Givn that one hour of flight instruction typically takes 90-120 minutes to brief/pre-flight the aircraft/post-flight secure the aircraft/debrief the student etc. the rate per hour should be in the order of $70 PH for an instructor employed as a casual.

Or have all of those doom and gloom stories from flying school owners got you all spooked?
All you have to do is remove the knives from each others backs, stick together for long enough and ensure you have an effective voice. The rest will follow. You should be earning what a GA casual multi driver does - About the $66/hr mark.
How do I know? I employ them.
It is all up to you. You never know, one day you might be able to actually make a decent living from it and attract the right type of focussed teachers/people for the job, rather than the multitude of immature kiddies who have no real idea or even guidance from their equally inexperienced seniors.

The casual rate a company chooses to pay their instructors can also depend on the turnover of pilots. Im sure we are all aware that many pilots turn to instructing purely to build up hours after obtaining their CPL. The goal then being to move on to CHTR or RPT work as soon as possible. Operators know this and take advantage of the situation by offering poor $ for hours that instructors depserately want. And there will always be someone more desperate who IS willing to work for low $.
For operators with a high turnover, you can expect a low pay rate. There is no incentive to pay more $ for instructors that will move on in the blink on an eye for a better job.
