Question Mecir & Pifr

Folks,
I completed and successfully passed an IREX course in 2000. I did not unfortunately pursue the actual rating due to costs and a change in career direction. I am now re-considering adding an IFR rating to my bag of tricks.
My first question regards the theory training, is there an expiry date? I would obviously re-study the required material but would love to not redo the theory exam.
My second question relates to the MECIR and PIFR training. At this stage I don't really expect to use an MECIR in the near future and so I was wondering if I completed a PIFR course if any of this could count towards the MECIR if I went down that path later? My thinking is that I could use the PIFR to build my skills and confidence and i also have a two week break at the end of this year, not long enough for a MECIR but ok for the PIFR. Also would it be better to do a twin engine endorsement and do the PIFR on that if the time did count better towards a MECIR?
My thanks in advance for any responses, feel free to ask me to clarify anything.
Regards,
P-W

Just sit the MECIR and then go to CASA and ask for the pifr. Might cost a 'processing fee' but saves 2 separate tests. Also the pifr has to be done as 2 separate tests. The enroute part, then the FPA's. It can be done as one entire test as i did, but the MECIR test would actually be less flying as compared to a pifr with ndb, vor, ils/llz fpas. My pifr test consisted of 1 leg of enroute, land, wait till specified time for the second test booking. Take off, vor, ils, 2nd leg, ndbx2. Bit silly if u ask me.

When I did my MECIR test about 3 months ago I got PIFR with it as well. All in the one test.

Best piece of advice you will get

Forget the PIFR! Get a MECIR or a SECIR (if u r a bit short of the readies).

Nope, no expiry. Dunno the reference, but I also had more years than planned between passing IREX and finishing MECIR. No problem on the day :-)

According to the nameless faceless CLARC a couple of months ago, once you pass the CIR test you can get a PIFR (1) by having the ATO fill in the paperwork at the time, or (2) by having an authorised person put the sticker in your logbook on the basis that your CIR covers the PIFR, or (3) by applying directly to CASA once the CIR is on your licence.

My ATO wasn't keen on option 1, and I've asked two authorised people for option 2 but neither was convinced unless CASA put it in writing, so next I'm going to pay the money and try option 3. ... Now to try and fill in the form that wasn't designed to do this :-)

Noooooooo! A PIFR only requires 20 hours IF time to get after which you can rack up the last 10 hours Instrument Flight Time on your own - not to mention being able to go and practice anything you're not happy with as many times as you like without that very expensive lump of human sitting next to you. Admittedly, in practice, the 2 PIFR tests you will need will take up approx 3-4 hours of that last 10 but you'll still be way in front when ready for the CIR test.

UnderneathTheRadar,

I still need to know if the hours of IF time from the PIFR training count towards the time for the CIR? Does it reduce one for one. Is it better (from a reducing the MECIR training time point of view) to do the PIFR on a twin or a single?

CAO 40.2.1 states that you need 40 hours 'Instrument Time' of which 20 can be in an approved synthetic trainer. There is no requirement for the instrument flight time to be dual or PIC, SE or ME. As long as you have the aeronautical experience and meet the standards for the type of CIR you are applying for then what/how/in what type is irrelevant.

The only catch is in paragraph 10.4.3A - you need to be certain that your instructor/CFI will sign off for your flight test to proceed with the mix of training - SE/ME & Dual/PIC you propose to do.

Regards,
UTR.
