Essendon glory days!

..those were the days.. although I'm a little too young myself to remember it. Really can't imagine a DC9 taking off from there these days.

I remember Alan xxx telling me some years ago that he and a FO took the AN DC-9s from Essendon to Tullamarine on the handover night. He said they took off from 26 at Essendon and landed on 34 at Melbourne . . . they didn’t even retract the gear. They got a taxi back to EN each time and did it all over again. Nice story.
Bottums Up
My dad travelled a lot and it seemed the family was always at Essendon either collecting him, or seeing him off. Electras, Viscounts, 727-100, 727-200, DC9, Argosys, and my first flight, an F27 to CBR.
No airport has ever had an atmosphere close to that of Essendon.

I was talking to a mate who is a retired TAA captain who reckons the shortest flight in his logbook is three minutes forty seconds from Essendon to Tullamarine in a 727.
I have another mate who was an apprentice at Essendon who remembers chasing hares around the place with a tug in the small hours of the morning.

My first flight into Essendon was from Hobart in a AN Convair 440 in 1961. The terminal in those days was north of the tower, and one could collect your baggage and walk across to catch the tram into town.

Hopefully the above link works - it has the most amazing series of older photos (mainly around Melbourne) in the 50's and 60's, taken by an enthusiast who just recorded them all for posterity. Click on the TAA registrations as well as the Ansett regos.

Yes Biscuit Chucker...plenty of C-172 available for hire at Essendon Airport.
I have a Cessna based out there and its a 172M, flies real well.
I live in Essendon as well and its a great place to live...and you are close to everything, 10 mins to Tulla, 10 mins into the city via the freeway...fantastic....

For more photos of historic Essendon, including a few aerial shots, have a look at http://airwaysmuseum.com or visit the Airways Museum at Essendon for more.
Capt Claret - I agree with you re the atmosphere at Essendon.
I was based there from late 1968 until the move to Tullamarine in late October 1972.
17/35 at Essendon was the shortest runway (1524 metres) in the country we operated the DC9 to/from. It was 'interesting' sometimes.
Another short runway was Forrest which TN operated a DC9 to on one occassion. To complete the picture AN took a B737-200 (CZM) to Wynyard
(1513 metres) in the early 1980's.

Can remember as though it was yesterday driving my Morris Minor in 1970 up to the "10 minute car park" at TAA, going through the hole in the fence with my bags to put them on board the 727 to Adelaide (was deadheading for the monthly F27 "track trip"), then duck into crewing for my ticket then park the car down near Flight Admin and walk on board.
No ID,no security, open cockpit doors, fun and real flying. The AFAP in its glory days with Presidents (Guggenheimer, Smithwell, Holt etc) who could pick up the phone and make a Minister squirm. I work in Korea now, my office at Kimpo near where the many of the Captains I learned from (Knappstein,Holding Lushey etc) learned their trade on Meteors, Sea Furies etc.
Oh, what have we lost.........! I'd even give up my beloved 777 for flying to go back to those innocent days.
