flappist, synthetic trainers / simulations (other than full-motion simulators) have never, ever been designed to train flying ability. However, they're fantastic as procedures trainers.
If you can improve your instrument scan rate, situation awareness, and instrument approach flying (especially when dealing with non normals) without paying $250 an hour, then why not? How are things like FMC operation taught? I can guarantee its not in a jet. It's not even in a simulator.
But don't worry, I don't think CASA is about to issue any licences based on MSFS performance

I find planning for diversions is good practiced on FS, it just gives a preview of what to expect on the real flight, where to expect alternates to be in relation to your track etc.
Vista Oz is free software made by an Ozzy company. fantastic scenery.
oh, the software is here

I hope the womeraii dont see this as advertising, but if it helps anyone improve their situational awareness when planning or using it as a preview of a real planned trip, then that must be a good thing.

I downloaded & watched that Airports of VOZ clip...very good BTW...but I loved the music. It took me a little bit to find it, but the song is called Teardrop by Massive Attack.

YES..................CASA has already approved an instalationthats based on MS Flight Sim 2004 as a CAT B flight training divice at a southern airport, and there is another one comming soon.
MS FS2004 is far superior to the Frasca and AST simulators. Its how its put together thats counts, cant just whack in on your laptop and log time.
Many schools still use the AGM-6T sim which is nothing more than a pc in a box, ant its fully approved.
