ASICs for BIRDSVILLE?

It's around a month to go before a bunch of us head towards YBDV for the weekend to part with some hard earned $$ on both getting there and punting, but my question is:

How will this new SecurityControlled Airport house so many, shall we say tired and emotional types, without displaying their "even harder earned" ASIC?

DoTARS have issued an exemption to all persons attending the Birdsville races from the need to display an ASIC between 29 August and 5 September 2006. For further information contact Andrew Geddes, Diamantina Shire Council, 07 4746 1202

So says the info on my club site. However, I cannot find any evidence to corroberate this information on the DOTARS site. Best bet is phone Mr Geddes and ask the question.

Excellent. When an 'anti terrorist' measure becomes too much of an inconvenience to enforce they just scribble out an exemption. Money well spent these ASICs.

tobzalp, precisely. Now, all you prospective terrorists take note - 29 Aug to 5 Sep is when you must strike - at Birdsville, ok? Any other time or any other place, you haven't a chance... the ASIC will save us!

For future reference to potential BDV visitors, the gate code next to the bowser is written on the back of the door.

...or you can just walk around to the makeshift 2' wire fence.

Well from DOTARS' perspective what could they do?

Picture it!

Some min wage, uniformed goon pitches up and demands to see the ASICs of a plane load of typical race goers as they unload 600kg of party essentials from a C210...and gets his lights punched out

Think about it....it would be embarrassing!

Think about the OH&S ramifications

It'd be all over Pprune and the thread would go for 20 pages....DOTARS would be a laughing stock...oh yeah, I remember now...they are already

Seems that the exemption is true.
Pages 1406 & 1407 of the 14-Jun-06 Government Notices Gazettes (caution, it's an 8 Mbyte PDF) http://www.ag.gov.au/portal/govgazon...0?OpenDocument
says
Exemption from displaying an ASIC in a secure area.

I, Patrick Francis McCrudden, Section Head, Major Airports Section, Aviation Security Operations Branch, Office of Transport Security, Department of Transport and Regional Services, under regulation 3.08 of the Aviation Transport Security Regulations 2005, give all persons attending the 2006 Birdsville Races at Birdsville Airport, an exemption from displaying an ASIC in the airside area at Birdsville Airport, as indicated on the map attached to this notice. This exemption operates for the period from 00:00 on Tuesday 29 August 2006 to 00:00 on Tuesday 5 September 2006.
Date: June 2006
and the affected areas on the picture are the runways and GA and RPT aprons.

If this guy, as "section head, major airports section" is in responsible for Birdsville, which airports would the section head of minor airports be in charge of?!

One other question, is 00:00 Tuesday on Monday night or Tuesday night? Bit misleading to say 00:00 Tuesday for the start when, by my reckoning it's actually Wednesday morning the exemption starts and finishes. Of course it SHOULD be 0000Z (i.e. 10am) but what chance they thought of that?

I'm annoyed that I had to search out and discover this information.

Dotars made the exemption, so they should inform all affected parties, (ie pilots) via a better method than simply a 2 page notice in an 80 page, weekly government gazette.

The pollies and bureaucrates seem to assume that I have absolutely nothing better to do than to continuously monitor their proclamations and utterings to discover if something they've dreamt up is going to affect me.
