Who cares. Nothing beats the sound of 4 turning and burning dog whistles on the old Vicount or Argosy.

Like Brian mine was 1946 but I was a BIG KID of three.
The old man was flyin' her on a demo at Mascot... Possibly the introduction of the TAA's DC-4 to the public .
I sat down the back with my mother and got alarmed at the old boy's carelessness with the wing tip as we were doing a turn over the drome.... reckoned he was going to drag it along the dirt and yelled, "Watch out for the wing, Daddy watch out for the wing!"
My mother explained that we were up high and the wing couldn't touch the ground... silly bitch! I was sitting next to the window and could SEE that it was a near miss.
When we stopped I noticed from my lofty window, a very nice man who must have known how important I was, set up a red rope on stands to the steps from the terminal.
On exiting the aircraft some people arrived at the top of the steps with a little kid to come in and look her over.
I was shocked at the affrontry of this kid, daring to come into MY father's plane and rebuked him in no uncertain terms, ordering him off OUR property.
My mother tried to explain it wasn't JUST the old man's plane... Gawd she was misguided that woman. Knew bugger all!

Not so sure Auto Brake... I'm a bit hard of hearing and blame the two dogwhistles I had to listen to for four years... nothing to do with two Pratts for the former four years or the fact that I listened to me music through head phones turned up to number 8 on the volume selector... got cicaders inside me head twenty four hours a day now!
Gonna be listening to two big round Pratts again soon for a few hours. That'll be fun!

Hands up who remembers Connair parking the Herons around the back of the Darwin shed, in the area which then became part of the car-park?

...and BOAC VC-10s and Cathay Pacific 707s through Darwin on regular runs and QF742s parked out near the watertower for the Singapore run every afternoon about 16:30??

Oh yea, FKA and FKF actually got bigger just recently too...

And gentlemen how could one forget the ice creams that used to be served if you were lucky enough to have a red boarding pass.

Ansett's weekend breakfasts were also pretty damn good, those little cereal boxes and Danish pastries if those early 0600 departures serve me correctly.

Yummo!

One for you Oz-stalgics

I remember working BOAC check-in at LHR in 69-70, handling the QF551 (?) Saturday service to Sydney.

There was a family of emigrants, asking me about the routing. 'Does it go via Singapore?' No. 'Oh, so it must go via New York & Los Angeles?' No.

So I reeled off the stops for them: Bermuda, Nassau, Mexico City, Acapulco, Papeete, Nandi, Sydney.

Has there ever been a flight to match that?

Or an aeroplane: B707-338. Flight number from London would have been QF580 as QF581 would have operated from Australia. And how times change? Crews were in those days based in London, Bermuda (may have been Nassau but time does things to the memory) and Acapulco.
