jetstar looking for nz based lame/ame

in todays christchurch press (1/7)

jetstar are looking for christchurch based lames and ames
$80k for lame , 50k for ame, interesting to note that previous experience on a320, 737ng, and 767 would be an advantage, i can understand a320, but with the 737ng and 767, does that mean big brother will be sending gear over to be fixed?

Don't think anybody's going to touch that job with a barge poll whilst they're offering a pittance.


Why would you accept $80,000 NZD when your counterparts in Australia are being paid over $100,000 AUD?(And I don't believe that there are compulsory super contributions from employers in NZ so, that's another 9% less)


The need for 73NG and 767 experience would be a fairly blatant attempt by Qantas/Jetstar to have the capability of doing there own ground handling (engineering wise) in Christchurch.Hello everyone at Air New Zealand/ANZES


Sadly, for the bean counters that come up with such scheme's, there are not a large supply of surplus engineers with the qualifications that they're asking for (particularly Avionics) awaiting any chance to grab what pittance is offered them. That's despite that fact that QF management seem determined to destroy the irreplaceable skill base that they have in Australia with the outsourcing of it's Heavy Maintenance maintenance. (where do they think Line Maintenace people start out?)


If they seriously want people to work for them in Christchurch, they're going to have to have a serious rethink on the remuneration package at least.This is just market forces coming back to bite all these globalisation/outsourcing exponents right in the bum.

Or, God forbid, take some people who don't quite have the qualifications that they're after, and spend some money to train people up.


Of course, this is money that could be spent on executive bonuses so, that idea's probably a non starter.


Looks like Jetstar will have to use people from their already insuffient numbers they have in Australia to keep the Christchurch base going for a little while longer.

I would suggest that $80,000 NZD would go a lot further in CHC than 100,000 AUD in SYD. Its not about the money, but about what lifestyle that money will get you.

Mayby so....but the cost of living in NZ has shot up in the last 5 years..as you probably well know.

If the offer is competitive they will get a response..if not they wont...rather simple really

The CHC base was supposed to be up and running by March this year but it looks like it will be supported until God knows when. They won't get anybody from OZ to take up a permanent position and they've already lost one of their contract AMEs before he could become permanent and the EIC will be based in HBA. As to life style, the shift pattern is one to die for in that it will kill you. At least you don't have to do wheel changes there, a certain person has found it too hard xfer wheels across the pond regularly. But as Basil said "Don't mention the war!"

H.H....yeah mate...that seemed obvoius...I was trying to make comparison...somehow a paragraph never made it in my post that related to lame,s so thats why it sounds out of order....will try to re-edit it

There is POSSSIBLY a few LAMES in the world that with a320,737ng and 767 licences that would be interested in living in CHC on $80K, but I doubt it!!!

I have just left aviation after 20 yrs with 747 and 767 licences(very much outdated qualifications). I have spent a total of two weeks unemployed before I started on a new position in Syd outside of aviation earning $80K Aussie + Super (no night shift no weekends- slightly more basic pay than I was on before).

I would much rather live in SYD working dayshift mon-Fri than CHC working nights and weekends for less money.

Guys, you don't have to put up with the **** than these companies are dishing out.

Just leave.


P.S. G'Day Singapore Chockchucker, had any good birdstrikes lately??

Having recently been to CHC the cost of living is not that much different than across the ditch. The difference in NZ $ between Main land JQ LAME base pay and Proposed NZ JQ LAME pay is around $30000 less, to look after the same A/C quite a big difference, conditions/benefits are a bit different as well.

In regard to 737 and 767 an advantage maybe they will be required to look after "big brother" turn arounds/break downs as well, probably for the same money no doubt.

Numbskull I hope your head hurts allot less now that you no longer have to bash your head against a QF wall.

Does anybody know if the position in CHC has been filled?

I heard a good rumour, Air NZ ran a 777 course for its LAMEs and apparently 6 of the 14 quit to work somewhere else after gaining the qualification.

The employment climate is a bit different for LAMEs as no one wants to do the dirty job anymore. QF has had less applicants than positions offered in recent recruitment of apprentices, where it would appear there are plenty of would be pilots whom want to fly for any money....!
