Electronic Flight Bags - Legal?
Wondered if anyone is aware of the status of using a dedicated Electronic Flight Bag or a computer loaded with JeppView/AIP in flight?
CASA has been running a regulatory reform programme to investigate use of EFB since 2002, but nothing heard.
At the moment this would put one's trusty laptop loaded with electronic charts, etc, back in the laptop case just when you wanted to use it -- its a Portable Electronic Device and the legality of turning it on in flight is questionable.
Flight Safety magazine featured Charles Darwin University lecturer Bob Pascoe's tablet pc loaded with AIP charts and flight planning software. Jeppesen has links to five suppliers of EFB that are legal in the USA under their FAA advisory circular on EFB.
So they're out there, and looks like they are legal in the USA. When will I be able to chuck my nav bag with its 2x 2" jepp binders, company ops manual, etc?
