Drone squadron for NT
By NIGEL ADLAM
11may06

PILOTLESS planes are to patrol Territory waters in the fight against illegal fishermen.

Coastwatch will operate the so-called drones by remote control, probably from Darwin.

But officials in Canberra declined to give details yesterday. They said where the UAVs _ unmanned aerial vehicles _ would be stationed was ``classified information''.

The Federal Government will spend $9 million over the next two years trialling the drones.

Coastwatch declined to say how many would be bought but the Northern Territory News understands there will be ``quite a few''.

The drones, already used by the US military in war zones, would carry radar and hi-tech sensory equipment able to spot and film suspect boats at high altitudes.

The planes are part of the Federal Government's desperate search to find cheaper ways to hold back the armada of illegal fishing boats in northern waters. (Indon fishermen will be terrified )

Coastwatch said it would use UAVs capable of flying at low to medium altitude and with long endurance. Some planes can fly for 48 hours without being refuelled.

UAVs can be as light as 25kg and be launched by hand or catapults.

They were used to try to sight Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan. (yeah ..that worked well)

Territory Fisheries Minister Kon Vatskalis said $6.9million to be spent on marine rangers _ announced in the Federal Budget _ was not enough because the money had to be shared between 14 north Australian groups.

``They (rangers) are ideally placed to apprehend illegal foreign fishermen but have instead been given the token task of monitoring the bio-security risk of illegal fishermen,'' he said.

So now we will have (more) aircraft flying around using no coms.
Does anyone know what sort of cruise altitudes these things get around at?

Oh this is a far better idea...

Territory Fisheries Minister Kon Vatskalis welcomed the cash boost.

But he was disappointed only $6.9 million had been set aside for the marine ranger program.

``The rangers are ideally placed to apprehend illegal foreign fishermen but have instead been given the token task of monitoring the bio-security risk of illegal fishermen,'' he said.

WTF would you want to pump more money into the marine ranger program? Is there any government department responsible for ensuring that they actually do their job.

What is to stop these indigenous folk from just riding around in government funded boats fishing for themselves??

I find it an insult that they say the marine rangers are ideally placed to aprehend the illegal fisherman! Are the marine rangers aware of the rules of the sea, protocols for apprehending, boarding and ultimately seizing a vessel, the rules of engagement etc....

If the government wants to spend money on border security.. put more patrol boats and navy boats out there to actually catch the illegal fisherman instead of just applying a bandaid to the bad publicity that the Howard government is getting over border security, in particular the illegal fishing.

Just my two cents

You could always try this
Satellite radar sensors detect ships well because their metal surfaces and sharp angles have a high signal return, in contrast to that of the surrounding water.
Envisat ASAR imagery is therefore being utilised for ship detection in a growing number of activities worldwide, including the protection of Icelandic fisheries through the Improving fisheries Monitoring through integrating Passive and Active Satellite-based Technologies (IMPAST) project run by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (EC-JRC).

some have been flying through enroute airspace in block levels of FL500-600 (Global Hawk) however they can cause ATC headaches in non radar airspace as they dont use VHF frequencies(well they can but dont until only a few VHF transfers left to base - on descent). All their position reports are done over the phone!
They were doing flight trials from RAAF Edinburgh.

What are we going to do once we catch them? Put them in a prison where they make more a day then if they are out (paid for by us) or send them home to do it again (also paid for by us).
Im up for the hard line stance, you cross the boarder we turn you into a floating target. They well only do it once (ok a couple of times, some people are slow learners) and then no more fishing.
