Question YLRE (Longreach) Holding Pattern

While doing Jepp amendments recently I noticed a different approach. I refer to Longreach QLD Jepp (13-2) eff 24 Nov 05, VOR or NDB Rwy 22.

There is a funny Holding Pattern Exit. Why ?
Why a RH hold to the north when there is limited circling to the north?

I am not familiar with the local area, but this stood out as not normal.
Any hints would be great.

Hello,
You will find for the RWY22 VOR the approach and patter are on the same side of the aid to keep you clear of R608

What's in R608? I thought the Jindalee antenna was down just west of Stonehenge!

I flew into LRE earlier this year and I am still trying to think what on earth could be in R608 as all I remember seeing was just flat land everywhere stretching out for miles.

I'm still trying to get over the fact that LRE is soon to become a 'secure aerodrome' - they've got heaps of work to do as there is just a 1m fence between the punters and the tarmac. Not that there is a lot to do if the evil people get airside though... unless you want to look at well umm... dirt.

Does anyone actually know what the hell R608 is protecting?

My ERSA tells me there's a radiation hazard, surface to 8200, 24 hours a day and administered by the RAAF. I have no idea what the radiation hazard might be, perhaps they have a leaky microwave oven door in the crew room.

Be carefull not to fly over at 8100 agl cos you might fry those precious goolies or maybe you'd just glow in the dark

R608

I have also wondered what is in R608, apart from a lot of flat country. I do remember some time back a proposed nuclear waste dump (nasty sh1t from Sydney I guess) or ex medical radioactive waste dump being proposed out that way. However 8200 feet would seem odd.

Maybe it is an OHR installation, however I thought they were in the NT......maybe we've been lied too...... again....

If anybody knows for sure I am sure we would all be to know!!

Cheers

Thumbs down

In view of what has happened in Sydney over the last week, that last post was very inappropriate and has nothing to do with aviation or this thread (or any thread for that matter!).

Thank You

185skywagon

thanks mate, you have been most helpful.

Next time I am out your way I shall have a beer with you on your club verandah....ASIC card securely fastened around my clothing somewhere of course!!!

Think I might have met you a few months back anyway, but would be good to get out there again.

Cheers
