wakatipu aero club, queenstown
hi folks,
can anyone tell me whats the state of affairs at the wakatipu aero club? Does anyone recommend doing the 50 hr employability course? Does it really lead anywhere? Ive heard rumours its all gone to pot since Carlton Cambell departure.
Thanks

Wakatipu Aero Club
Ohmygod
Ive heard all sorts of stories about whats happening there as well. What have you heard?
I understand the weather down there has been average, so the training has been limited but thats through no fault of theirs.
Im looking at going down there myself, so if you could tell me what you've heard, that would make my choice a lot easier.
Ta.

From my experience the 50 hour course in Queenstown is great if you want to work there. In fact all operators into Milford Sound from either Queenstown, Wanaka or Te Anau require you to have completed the course.
Outside the Queenstown/Milford area operators do not require the same experience levels. Eg those around the Mt Cook Area do not require you to have completed the course and will start your mountain training off in a basic level.
If you would like to work down there then by all means head down and do it. There will be many of you on the courses, and hardly any jobs at the end of it. Add onto the high cost of living and the high chance of not finding anywhere to live down there the costs sometimes be prohibitive.
I would recommend talking to other scenic operators around the South Island to find out what they think of the 50 hour course before you launch off to do it, especially if you can't find work down there at the end of it.
If you have any questions on other operators in the Southern Alps just PM me.

Bramley,
I've done a mountain flying course there, and I found the standard of instruction to be at least the equal of any other flying school I've trained at.
On top of that, they're a pretty friendly bunch.
I'm not in a position to say whether anything has changed since Carlton Campbell left.

Ive just done my first few hours with them and have found it to be very impressive, the standards are far better than the schools that ive attended up in Auckland.
As for the Carlton question, Im not sure but at the end of my first flight I bloody knackered. In a flight that was 1.4 long, I was given 5 engine failures in my intro to mountain flying flight, not a forced landing lesson.
From what Ive seen so far, I would recommend this to anyone, my flying skills have improved a lot.
So as for the place turning to custard, I dont think so.

G'day Killer Loop me ol' mucker
Yer behind the times, already done and a bit more to boot!!! Jo's a top one and lovin the place.
Yup good old TC is at the helm and making his mark in a very positive manor with renewed enthusiasm and student monitoring.
All in a bid to make sure you meet the mark, are suitable for a job in the area on completion, are on track to meet your own goals, and most importantly you stay alive in this awesome, beautiful and dangerous environment.
Big boots to fill but TC was never one to shirk from a challenge.
Talk to ya soon mate.

Carlton may have left Wakatipu, but Tim was trained for this role by Carlton.
The club has a very active and professional committee, the whole operation is a model in how an aero club should run!
In my book, they are first class in all respects!
Enjoy your flying with them, you will never regret it.
