My First Job !!!
Hi All !!!
Late last year I completed my training including CPL, MECIR, NVFR etc. I in total have around 300 hours and about 20 hours on a C210. Im about to purchase a plane ticket somewhere to find my first job, but am unsure about where to head to first. I have a suit case packed and am ready to get out there, (with the very limited money that I have) in search of that job.
Many people have said not to go to Darwin or Cairns as the operators there, mainly want 500 hours as a minimum. Others say Kununurra has too many pilots looking for work. I was maybe thinking of heading across to Broome??? I currently live in Adelaide.
Once I get there is it normol to make an appoitment with the CP or just turn up on the doorstep. What sort of money should i expect, or be happy with (many say never work for free, which I do agree with) and what sort of flying could i expect to be doing??? Any advice, hints or any information that anyone could offer would be grealty appreciated. If Capt Fathoms suggestion isn't enough, use some other keywords like "Broome", "First Job North" etc.
P.S. You'll probably need a car. Drive up, don't fly.

Before you go check the yellow pages online and get the names / addresses of all the aircraft operators for all the areas you've mentioned. I wouldn't bother ringing ahead. Just turn up professionally dressed and presented, and politely ask to speak to the CP. Don't start out with the idea that you're "going to Broome" to find a job unless you're planning to get another fill-in job until you get a pilot position, you'll have to be flexible. You're going where the job is. A bloke in Broome might know a guy in Tennant Creek who has an uncle in Jabiru that might have a job going.

Make sure you resume is one page only!!
Be prepared for a lot of knock backs.
Take your car!
And if you have hospitality experience, that will come in very handy. This allows you to earn some money and stay in one place while you are waiting for the chief pilot to ring you

Hi There
If your planning on heading to Broome, plan to get there around early Feb to lay the ground work. PM if you want and I can give you some names in the areas. Long bloody way to drive for a job. Buy a backpackers car that is leaving town on the Gas Burner, you can usually pick something up dirt cheap ($500 - $1000) in relative condition.
Dont be disillusioned by the number fo guys hanging around town looking for work. Your in the mix as much as anyone else. Just dont expect too much from the operators. They have the pilots on the ropes and they know. Lastly have a blast, it a beautiful place and have a beer at the Roey for me.

Try calling Oasis Air at Halls Creek I heard they are looking for a Wyndham Base pilot and they dont mind calling in advance. They have had problems looking pilots to go there recently
I would drive rather than fly up, I know it's a long way, but it has advantages. Everytime you see an airstrip and a charter company or even just an aircraft, take the time to drop in n say hi, suss out what the go is. Even if they haven't got a job going or you don't have the experience, it will be helpful down the track.
Do some research and take a route, or even make detours to check companies out.
As for the Oasis job (and I have no idea if there even is one going), having been based in Wyndham for them previously, I think it would be a very tough first job, not so much the flying but the required PR and commercial skills. No offence, but if you are still living at home and straight outta school I'm not sure you could hack it.

You could try a place I think they call the "Wall" in Kings Cross Sydney. At least you would get paid and you would do the same thing that you have to do in GA, the only difference is they have more ethics and your fellow workers would give you some respect.
Drive vs fly.
I did the drive, twice. Came back to VIC via the old South Road which started from the SA/NT border through to ADL. Car practically in ruins because of the corrigations. My mistake was not hanging around long enough. The journey cost me a fortune. A week later & the phone rings: Job offer as a result of a letter posted weeks before. Damned if you do etc...

Sounds like Super Cecil knows more than a thing or two about the "Wall". However, to some degree, what he indicates here is true! Be prepared for knock backs, be prepared to know how to pull beers, be prepared to be called a UGAL (unemployed GA loser for the unitiated) etc etc. Anywhere up "north" you will ultimately find a flying position. Patience is the key.
