Qantas-new starters accomodation questions

I have a friend/s who although I...I mean they, don't have start dates yet want to be prepared if that magic phone call ever comes one day. My question is what are some various solutions/suggestions people have done when sorting out accomodation for themselves. As background I would be spending min time in Sydney after conversion/standby time and then commuting as required from a nearby capital city.
